How long is your maternity leave at your company?
I just found out that maternity leave at my company is 6 weeks for a natural birth - 8 weeks for a C-Section....are they crazy!!
I work for a large financial company in Mid-town and was so surprised at what a short amount of time you are entitled too.
Our main office in London - is entitled to 6 months paid maternity leave - what a difference of society from London to New York!
I always thought the minimal amount of time was 12 weeks paid maternity leave -
What does your company offer?

My company is the same as yours.... FMLA entitles you to take 12 weeks of maternity leave, but only 6 of them are covered under short term disability - meaning you get paid for only 6 of the 12 weeks. I know, it totally s*cks!

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
Our paid leave is 6-8 weeks, but FMLA gives you up to 12 weeks job-protection (it may be unpaid). If your employer has more than 75 employees, and you've worked there for more than 1 year, you probably get that too.
Plus in the state of New Jersey we get 12 weeks of "bonding time" meaning when the mom is cleared of all physical limitations, she gets an additional 12 weeks of job-protected, unpaid time with the baby.
Some people take full advantage of that, some people can't afford the time.
It's a nice option though!! Can't wait to take mine someday!!

I am not PG but my company only gives you 4 weeks no matter what c-section or natural and in the employee manual it says you must ask permission first before taking maternity leave
Is that even legal?

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
I have no idea and I am really worried. I don't want anyone to know i pregnant, so asking would be unusual. We don't have an employee manual (I asked). I am really concerned about this because. I work in a small office and if I'm not there, not much gets done. But my job is SO GREAT, I can't risk losing it. We are not covered by the FMLA.

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
I work for a large accounting firm and I get 8 wks 100% pay for c-section, 6 wks 100% pay for natural birth. We also get 2 wks before your due date at 100% pay and if you deliver after your due date, it doesn't cut into your time for after the baby is born. I also get 3 wks @ 100% pay under FMLA (I think it's under FMLA...not sure though). I have about another 3 weeks of vacation and then I can take an additional 6 months unpaid and still be guaranteed my job-- if I want it!

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
I have ot use up all my leave (annula leave and sick leave) and then I get 16 weeks (leave without pay) under the family medical leave act. I go back in the beginning of Feb, I have been out since 8/15. The federal govt support 16 weeks FMLA and I belong to a union

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
Not many companies offer 12 weeks paid. FMLA is 12 weeks but usually you are only paid for the standard 6 or 8 weeks.
I work for a large company and its the same. For me I am out on medical disability now because of my blood pressure so I get 6 weeks at full pay and because I have long term disability coverage I will get 1/2 pay for the rest until after I deliver and I am released to go back to work.
Its frustrating though isn't it. In Canada they get 1 year paid.

13 weeks 100% pay. I can then use all my vacation/personal days (5 weeks 3 days) and I can then take 12 weeks unoaid FMLA. Or I can take a 2 year leave and be guaranteed a job on my level at my pay when I come back. I have been home for 4 months now 100% pay. I go back Tuesday after labor day

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
FL doesn't have actual "maternity leave" It's a right to work state.
What I am doing is paying into short term disability through Aflac so when it is time that I need to go out on maternity leave (not even TTC yet) I will have 12 weeks short term disability at 75% of my salay plus I can also use the FMLA and vacation time. My company is really good about any time needed to be taken off.

Re: How long is your maternity leave at your company?
Ordinarily my company gave 8 weeks full pay natural and 12 weeks full pay c-section. They take half of your vacation time and any state disability pay you get while they are paying you full salary. The other 4 weeks natural you got disability from the state ($170 per week BEFORE taxes).
I was at my company 11 months when I gave birth, so I wasn't covered under FMLA or the company's maternity. HR didn't want to meet with me until the month before I went out, and my manager misunderstood what they told him, so under his advisement I used all my vaca time before I went out so I wouldn't lose it. Since I didn't qualify for FMLA, I was let go from my company days after I left the hospital (when my sick time ran out), and lost my medical coverage as well. DH's company went out of their way to make sure there were no problems getting me and the baby added to his plan, so there was no gap in our coverage. My manager as well as his manager told me that they would keep my job for me for 3 months after I delivered, but once the 6 weeks of state disability ended, I told them I wasn't coming back. I wanted to make sure I at least got the little bit of money I was entitled to.
I'd urge you to speak to your HR department as soon as you announce you are prego at work so that both you and your manager are clear on what is happening.
Also, everyone should keep in mind that FMLA guarantees you a job, not necessarily yours. I've seen companies (like the one my mom works for) use FMLA as a means to force people they don't like out, but have no means to fire them.

Same thing here, but I only got 5 weeks short term disability (the 1st week is considered a grace period UGH!).
