I teach Special Ed. on the Elementary level in Hempstead. ALthough it is rated the worst district on Long Island it is not that bad. I taught Self - COntained for 5 years and next year I am doing inclusion
I worked in Hempstead for summer school 2 years ago teaching 5th grade...
OK Hempstead is terrible : and I hate it there but they need a teacher too. I plan to look else where now that I am done having kids

I'm a speech pathologist. Before I had DS I was working in a NJ school district and before that I worked in a special ed preschool on LI.

Re: How many mommies are teachers?
It is so great that we have so many teacher mommys here!!
It's nice to know who you all are too! I had a general idea because I know some of you have mentioned that you were off for the summer -- but I didn't know there were so many of us.
I am SCARED for next year. First of all, I don't know how Emily will handle me going back to work after being home with her for 2 months -- especially since she'll be older. It wasn't bad when she was 8 weeks old but now she's used to this routine instead of the daycare routine.
Also I am going back into a self-contained classroom after doing collaborative for 2 years. I know the class I'll be having --- 11 1st graders and 1 2nd grader (my 3rd year having this kid!) and the class is rough. One girl has tourette's and they were trying to get her type3'd and put into 75 but it wasn't working. She runs around naked all day!! Then there is a boy who has some serious toiletting issues. It should be a crazy year! Plus I'll be finishing up my master's next year -- I have 18 to go! I'm getting it in ESL at St. John's and I have to take Dialects and Linguistics all in the same semester!!
This should be the offical "Mommy Teachers" thread!!! Should I change the title of it in the first post??

I will neve complain again about my regular ed kids. You get tons of because it's got to be so hard!

Well, after teaching Collaborative for 2 years I have to say that there are some reg-ed kids that are more difficult to deal with then my Special Ed kids.

I agree... after teaching sped for 5 year and then going into regular ed I have found that there are so many kids in the reg. ed classes that are worse than my sped kids. When I taught sped I had to be skip trained b/c of the very physical autistic kids that were in my class. I had an autistic kindergartener send me to the ER on the first day of school! It only got worse... no wonder I left.
so, to all you sped teachers out there, I admire you! I thought I'd put in a lifetime of teaching sped but I only lasted 5 year. (but my district is at fault too- no support)
