How many months...
I actually took my dd to a restaurant for the first time today. She's 2.5 months. I'm afraid of her getting sick, but also of disrupting other diners. Luckily, she behaved like quite the little lady! And hopefully she didn't pick anything up!
Go. I'm beyond stir crazy after 2.5 months, I can't imagine how you're feeling after 4!

How many months...
I couldn't stay couped up in the house all the time....DD was born on Memorial Day and it was beautiful weather from the get-go. I think her first time in a restaurant was 2 or 3 weeks. Before then, I think I strolled around the neighborhood daily and hit up the grocery store, coffee shop, drugstore, etc...

Re: How many months...
I took my kids everywhere with my by the time they were 8 weeks old. Out to eat, out for coffee, shopping, etc. It just depends on your comfort level with having the baby with you at certain places, I never had an issue taking my kids everywhere. I say go for it!

Re: How many months...
we took Ds 2 out for dinner I think when he was 10 days old. Can't remember with DS1, but we were quick.
We actually took each of them to florida to my parents vacation home at 9 and 11 weeks while I was on maternity leave, and we went for dinner a few time.

Re: How many months...
My issue wasn't fear of getting sick...DD was a June baby, it wasn't cold or flu season. I would have LOVED to have gotten out more. But she was an AWFUL newborn. Colic is not even the word. Screaming 24/7. Sleeping at 20 minutes a pop round the clock. I couldn't even really take her on walks. She would scream bloody murder in her snap and go to the point where people would come out of their houses to see who was being murdered. I was so stressed out by it. I would hate to leave the house. When we had to go out, DH would end up swinging her around in her car seat to try to quiet her while i had a nervous breakdown in the supermarket trying to get my shopping done and get out of there super quick. It was awful. The thought of a restaurant wasn't even plausible. It wouldn't be fair to the other diners.... and i would never enjoy myself.
So if you baby is not like this ,and you CAN go out, definitely do it. I would have if I could have!

You JUST described my experience with DD1 and I've been scarred bc of it. Hence why I'm so hesitant ....

Trust me, I feel you! It scarred me too. So much so that I never had another baby!

Re: How many months...
I never stayed home. When I wanted to go out, they came with me. When in a really "public" place in the winter (DS was a November baby), I'd keep the infant seat covered with a receiving blanket unless I was caring for him. Definitely go and have a good time!

Re: How many months...
I think with my first we didn't really go out until he was at least 4-6 weeks old. With my second, we went out earlier than that. At 4 months, we were going out a lot with each of them.
