How many of you went for the "Nuchal Fold Scan" and...
How many got a false Positive? I'm just so worried that I'll have to go through more testing for no reason. Especially the amnio, which I DON'T want to do? Any and all info would be great, Thanks!

my Dr said that test was not necessary for us since we are going for the triple screen. She said that test is used in the older PG women and high risk

The triple screen is what my Dr told me this test is. They do this test at 12-14 weeks then they do the normal one at 16 weeks and combine all three results...I'm just worried.

Re: How many of you went for the "Nuchal Fold Scan" and...
triple screen is a blood test, nuchal fold is an ultrasound test, isn't it??? UGH...sooo confusing.
BUT....yes we are doing the triple screen which includes the AFP, but it's all in one visit. It tests for Down's, trisomy 18, and neural tube defects.
Even though there is a high false positive result, it really just measures your chances of your child having one of these, not definitely if it does or doesn't. That's why they give further testing if your chances are less than 1 in 270 (I believe that's the #).
We went with it because it's non-invasive while the CVS and amnio put hte baby at risk, even if it's ever so slight.

I have to respectfully disagree. I am neither older, nor high risk, and I had this test done. It is actually the latest technology and is combined with the triple screen, or in my case, the Quad screen blood test. The total sum of these tests is called the Integrated test and is evidently much more accurate a screening. I have heard of such high rates of "false positives" with the triple screen.
The nuchal fold scan is simply a sonogram that measures a certain part of the baby's neck to test for Down's.
Having said all this, I did get a "false positive" screening result--however, I must stress that this was not the fault of the test, but of a human being who mis-transcribed the results and, needless to say, caused a lot of grief.
Best of luck with your decision and with your baby!!

Thanks Erin....
when I asked the NP about it, she said it is not standard procedure in their office but they'd do it if I wanted it.

Oh, and if you're on the fence about it...just think of it this way...it's probably the first time you'll see your little one dancing around and acting and looking like a real baby!!

Re: How many of you went for the "Nuchal Fold Scan" and...
I did the downs sono and finger prick @ 12 weeks and did not get a false positive. However, I declined the AFP test @ 16 weeks due to the high false positive rate. I knew I'd have my baby no matter what, and like you, wouldn't do an amnio. At my 20 wk sono they said there was no problems w/ the baby's spine (spina bifida.)

Re: How many of you went for the "Nuchal Fold Scan" and...
I had the Nuchal Fold Screening done at 12 weeks...it is one of the newest screening tests and is supposed to be 90% accurate for Down's. My Dr's office did this, gave me my results and then I did the AFP at 16 weeks and got results for that one too. They didn't combine the tests which they did for my SIL and called it an Integrated test.
I just turned 33 so I wasn't high-risk. My results came back great for both. I THINK (?) that the AFP is the only one with false positives...I'm pretty sure the Nuchal doesn't give FP's...

We did this test at 12 weeks - plus the triple screen later on. We actually had to pay for it because it is new technology and most insurance doesn't cover it yet.

I had the Nuchal Fold test done- they called it an ultrascreen. It was a combo of the sono and a blood test. I also had the AFP.

I had what's called the Integrated test. A sono at 13weeks (in which they and a blood test and then another blood test. They gave me the results all together and my results were fine. I had an anatomy scan (i.e. Level II ultrasound) a couple of weeks later where it was confirmed that there were no markers for downs syndrome or neural tube defects. I really never thought about not getting the test done. It's normal procedure at my doc's office.

I had the Nuchal Fold Scan but, I told them no matter what the result I would not have the amnio. When it comes down to it. It's YOUR decision.

Re: How many of you went for the "Nuchal Fold Scan" and...
I didnt do the extra testing... I know I would be keeping my baby no matter what, and didnt want to put myself through added stress if not necessary... I know quiet a few woman who had false positives.. (FMIL was one of them) Thats just what worked for me personally...
I will tell you though... at my 20 weeks sono...they checked for neural tube defecets and spinabifita (however you spell it) and everything was fine.. (my dr later told me this was a more accurate reading than the blood test)
so the only thing I dont know about was Down syndrome and the trisonmy 18...
