How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

I am asking because right now Jacob is having cereal, stage 2 and stage 3 food during the day and evenings but also 4 or 5 8 oz. bottles along with it. Is that too much? If it is, how do we eliminate a bottle...can I substitute juice or should i be feeding him more food? TIA! Chat Icon

Personally, in my opinion, I think that's probably too much formula at this point. You can start to introduce table food to help drop a bottle. Ava was on all table food (she is a huge eater) by 8 months, and we were down to three 6 ounce bottles, but she also never drank a lot of formula from the get go.

Good thread - but I feel like I have the opposite problem!
Leah is eating Stage 2's during the day but will only take about 4-6 oz, 4 times a day (total of 16-20 oz daily). I feel like she's not getting enough!

For Jacob, I would say give him more food each meal period. Leah can eat 1 jar of Stage 2 for breakfast, 2 at lunch and 2 at dinner.

This is exactly what Lily eats. Except she only has 3 6-8 oz. bottles a day. I was worried she wasn't getting enough, but she's sleeping well, growing, and refused the 4th bottle when I tried to fit it in. And she's getting 1/4 cup of cereal split between breakfast & dinner.

I'm still feeding her

cereal and stage 2 fruit for breakfast, one stage 2 veggie for lunch
stage 2 meat/veggie combo jar and stage 2 fruits.

She has 4 - 7oz bottles so 28oz a day. Now I'm thinking that's too much.

She does very little table food because of her milk allergy. I just haven't ventured there yet.

I think Jake had anywhere from 24-28 oz's when he was that age.

you are doing 2 jars for lunch and 2 jars for dinner? Gillian would love that but I thought it was too much. Am I reading it wrong?

DD is getting 3 6 ounce bottles a day but she doesn't usually drink the full 6 at breakfast and lunch. She also gets a jar and a half - 2 jars of food at lunch - or table food instead. And for dinner usually 1-2 jars of food. She's 9 months.

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

Our daughter is 9 months as we are actually trying to "fatten" her up a bit due to doctors orders but we are feeding her a jar of fruit in the morning, veggie at lunch, veggie at about 5 for dinner and fruit at about 7. She gets an 8 oz bottle with each, so 32 ozs a day. I was told that was too much formula so I'll try to cut out one bottle when she starts eating table food. All the jars are stage 2.

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

I just had this conversation with my Dr. last week. DS last month at 8mths was eating 3 meals (yogurt/or cereal, veggies, fruit & meats) along w/ 4-5 8oz Bottles and the DR said that 40oz per day were a bit much but if he wants it give it to him.

Now at 9mths (he is teething his diet has changed) he is still eating his 3meals with around 24-32oz of formula a day and the DR said it is completely normal. DS perfectly in his 50% in weith/height and per his Dr. his eating habits are normal.

Oh and he does drink a little juice mixed with water during meals and in bet. feedings. Not much maybe 3-5oz per day.

Hope that helps you! Chat Icon

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

Jillian is just about 9 mos and I give daycare 3 bottles of 6oz, she eats a breakfast (cereal st2 fruit), lunch (st 2meat & veggie or veggie alone)& snack (st 2 fruit and maybe something else cereal, puff, etc).

Although once she swiped a little piece of pizza away from another kid one day!

She also nurses at night and in the morning, so I'm hoping she gets about 20-22oz or so overall.

She's been sleeping like crap lately, so I'm making more of an effort go get more food into her at night lol!

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

DD is 9 months and drinks 4 6 oz bottles a day, but usually doesn't finish one.

The ped said as long as she is getting atleast 18 oz a day, she is happy with that. (You should also include the amount of formula that you mix into the cereal in your count).

As far as eating too much, if your ped isn't telling you to cut back, I would let them eat what they want - if they are full, they will stop. Especially with some of the heat that we had lately, you wouldn't want them to get dehydrated - they only get hydration from the formula.

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

thank you all so much! Now my question is, what exactly should I change if anything at this point. This is what he eats for the day:

6am: 8oz formula

9am: 2 tablespoons cereal with a jar of stage 2 fruit and 8oz bottle

12pm: 2 tablespoons of cereal with a jar of stage 2 vegetables and an 8oz. bottle

3pm: 8oz bottle and puffs

6:00: stage 3 dinner with either a jar of veggies or Yo Baby yogurt. We also give him tablefood like plain chicken.

8pm: 6oz formula (its mostly water but it helps him to fall asleep).

Can anyone suggest anything that I could change or try with him? We were thinking of eliminating the 6am bottle and giving him tablefood like pancakes instead. Thank you all so much!!!

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

Matty is turning 8 months in a few days and drinks about 25-26 oz a day (broken out into 4 bottles and what we mix with cereal)

He eats:

a few Tbs of cereal and 1/2 jar of fruit for breakfast

1-2 jars of fruits and veggies for lunch

1-2 jars of veggies/meat and fruit for dinner.

Next week we will introduce yo baby!

ETA: I think your idea of eliminating the 6am bottle would be the way to go. I read somewhere that at around 9 months you can offer food instead of a bottle first thing in the morning. But, since formula or BM is really the most nutritious thing for babies in the first year there really is no rush to do so. Maybe wait a month or two before trading a bottle for food? It sounds like he is doing great as things are! Chat Icon

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

I would keep the nighttime/am bottle, give him a taste of solids after maybe. Your sched looks good for his age.

Our PED rec's min 21 oz of formula til 1 years old. Formula should still be main source of nutrition til that time, solids are just practiceChat Icon

Re: How many ounces of formula should an 8 month old have daily?

My DS is 8 months and his day goes like this:

Breakfast -
6oz. bottle
1/4 Cup cereal mixed with 1/2 jar of fruit

Lunch -
6.oz bottle
Jar of Gerber DHA Fruit/Grains or Yogurt

Dinner -
2oz. water
Jar of Veggies, sometimes 1/2 jar of a fruit or desert

Bed -
8oz. bottle

My ped. suggested replacing a bottle with a few ounces of water just to quench his "thirst".
