If it is a friend I usually spend about $40 or get two outfits and accessories. If it is a family member I spend more along the lines of $75.

This is such a great topic.. 1st Birthday season has arrived for Jacob also and as of of right now including the one we had this weekend, we have 5 invitations on our refrigerator... and this will only get worse.... through november...
It all depends on who the birthday is for: for relatives and very close friends kids 40-50
for my mommy friends that I have made since Jacob is born and speak to them on the phone I would say between 30-40.
for the babies who JAcob is getting invited to because they are in one of his classes and we only see them there. I think an appropriate gift is around $20...
This topic is a huge discussion I am having with my friends. I just think it get out of hand and the money adds up...
The good thing is that he is the oldest of most of his friends so I also will wait to see what he gets in gifts and then will act accordingly..

Honestly, with the amount of parties Scotty gets invited to, I'd say 20-25. I'd say that's the average that he's gotten for his parties too.

Same here - that's for pre-school. We had 6 birthdays in 2 weekends - not a chance we were spending more than $50.

.
ITA. I just want to add that I feel differently about first birthdays than I do others. This structure is more for first birthdays, IMO. I would spend less overall for 2nd birthdays and up. And sometimes I might look at what type of bday party is being thrown. If it is at a fancy catering hall, I might spend a smidge more than a simple picnic in the park.

Non-relatives we spend about $25-30. Family and close friends it's about $50-100.

The going rate here ( what we get and what we give) is between 20 and 30 dollars. At my sons last part every single kid ( about 20 kids) gave a gift card worth that much.
This is just for school friends, not family

Wow...you guys are generous! For my step-daughter (who's almost 10) I would say the average gift she gives to her friends and receives are between $15-$25 (including gift cards).
For family members, I try to keep it around $25-$35. I guess I'm a cheapskate

It depends on who it is for. family 1st birthdays = $100 family other birthdays= $50 non-family 1st birthday =$40 non-family other birthdays=$25-$40..depending on the occassion
If I was purchasing gifts for Molly to bring to a party at 8 years old I would spend $25-$30.

Jake's only been to one so far - a first birthday for our neighbor's daughter who we are very friendly with. We spent $50.

Unless I have a specific gift suggestion I like to give toys for birthday gifts. I stay at about the $25 - 30 range. There are so many fun things you can give in that price range.
