how much do you think is an "average" pregnancy weight gain?
I'm just not sure if people who gain more than 25 lbs or so really talk about the numbers. So, without referring to yourself, how much do you think most people really gain?
I am asking because my friend just told me that she gained well over 40lbs. She looked small to me and I saw her many times and very close to the date she delivered. My other friend says she only gained 20 but she was huge. I know it is hard to tell by looking at someone, but the girl who said she gained over 40 is always more honest about everything. She thinks it may have gone over 50 but she just didn't want to know at that point. I would have guessed maybe 15-20 total for her!!!!!!

I would say maybe 30-45. I know they say 25-35, but I know many people who have gained more than that.

I dont' know if there is an average...everybody was different. I carried twins and they said i should gain between 40-50 and were actually worried that i was not gaining enough in the beginning. I wound up gainin about 39 pounds at the end.

Re: how much do you think is an "average" pregnancy weight gain?
I know a lot of people who gained a pound a week and there for ended up about 40lbs heavier.
My doctor wanted me to stay in the 25-35lb range, I came in way below that, but, I wasn't the skinniest minny to begin with.

My dr told me between 25 to 35 lbs. I think it depends on the individual.

I think the average is closer to 40 lbs. My one skinny friend gained 70 and you NEVER could have told the difference between her 70 lb gain and someone elses smaller gain.
I think its all relative to the persons shape etc.

Re: how much do you think is an "average" pregnancy weight gain?
Im going to say about 30-40...
I gained 50 with all of my pregnancies and I lost the weight very easily...
In my case I know it was a lot of water weight as I always went home from the hospital 25 lighter!

Re: how much do you think is an "average" pregnancy weight gain?
25-35 is considered "average" but plenty of people go over.
I will probably be close to 30-35 at term. Assuming I don't start shoveling food. I was 20 Lbs at 28 wks.
You are "supposed" to gain about 10-11 Lbs in the last trimester. But my Dr. told me that it was not always the case and that some people don't gain that much at the end.
Who knows? I know more people who went over the 40 Lbs mark than under the "average".

I am not shy to say that I gained 50 pounds...it is what it is, and I had a BEAUTIFUL 9lb, 8 ounce baby and have lost 35 pounds at 4 weeks post delivery

well, yeah...that's what they want you to gain, but I think the OP is asking what people REALLY gain.
I think most people go well over the recommended weight...at least everyone I know has. My teeny tiny friend who had the cutest little figure gained 80 lbs and another friend who was in the best shape ever gained 90 lbs!! They both lost the weight, but I really don't think MOST women only gain the recommended 25-35 lbs.

I agree. I mean, I think it would be hard to gain just 25lbs, I think between 35lb and say, 50lbs is more what people actually gain. And when you think about it, it makes sense, since you usually find out you are pregnant around 5 weeks, then if you are good, it is a pound a week.
And that also doesn't mean you are going crazy either, I am SO swollen near the end now that when I had gained 6lbs in 3 weeks the doctor's office completely dismissed it saying that it was water weight.

I think its all relative to the persons shape etc. ITA. Also, it depends on how the person carries. I got all the weight in my belly & actually lost some inches on my hips & thighs in the beginning of the PG.
A good friend of mine gained only 15 lbs her whole PG, but gained it all over & looked heavier (as she herself admitted).
I think it is really hard to tell just by looking at someone.
I wish I could find some pics of Kate Hudson when she was PG....she gained 60 lbs +, as did Jenny McCarthy.....
