Depends on what you want - the unit should only be anywhere from $350 - 700, depending on size. Then add installation. It should definitely, all together, be less than $1,000 - hopefully closer to $500.

I bought a brand new upgraded one (so that it can sustain all the showers running in the house, faucets, irrigation) with installation cost $1500

Great question. Our HWH is so small. This may sound like a silly question but can you install it yourself?

I don't think it's silly....I was wondering the same thing.

I don't think it's a silly question at all. Honestly, if it's hooked up the gas line, I wouldn't want to try to install it myself - but that's just me!

WE just had a brand new Bosch tankless water heater installed. The unit itself cost $900 and we paid $500 for installation. It was a big job.

You can get a conventional water heater installed for 1/2 that. I wouldn't do it yourself unless you know how to turn off hte gas and water supply to your home.

a tankless heater is just what I was going to suggest! I don't know if they have a version for oil homes, but for natural gas I know it exists.....

Its a genius invention. It heats water only when the hot water tap is opened somewhere in the house... so while no one is home, no energy is spent. It's really energy efficient/cost effective in the long run and there's a slim possibility it may even be eligible for a small tax write-off, like installing solar panels....

We just had one put in - top of the line model, fully installed - and it was almost 2k.

ETA: "just" - almost 2 years ago actually. Didn't realize it was that long ago...

Absolutely. The more expensive cost will be recooped in no time with the energy savings. I know they have units for gas (that's what we have) and for propane. I am not sure about oil... Chat Icon

Re: How much does it cost to replace a hot water heater?

Thanks girls I'm going to look into the tankless hot water heater.....Do you think the hookup would be the same as the traditional tank. My dad and his friend both installed his but it was the traditional one......i wonder if he could hook up that one for me and save me $500.
