A lot. With life expectancies and expenses what they are today (and projected to be down the road), I think you need around at least a million dollars saved for a couple to retire at 65. This is why everyone should start maxing out their 401k as soon as they can. Also, I highly doubt that SS will be available for us....

A lot. My DH is a financial adviser and often he must tell his clients who are thinking about retiring within the year that they can't because they haven't saved enough.

Yikes. I also heard about SS not being available for us when we retire. What are they going to do with all the money we've been contributing for all these years? I doubt they're going to give it back to us. That's just not fair. The U.S. system for this stuff and medical insurance $ucks

The $$ is going to people on SS now...they are not saving it up and not giving it to us..there just won't be enough for us by the time we get there. Yet again poor management of our $$ by the government!
