how much "self-entertaining" should a 4 month old be doing??
DS and DD are 4 months old and great babies... they can entertain themselves in their cribs with their mobiles, or on an activity mat, or on a blanket with books and toys for a long time if I let them.... I know they need to start learning how to be independent and do that without it being Mommy-directed play time.... but I'm wondering how much "solo" time is recommended at this age? 5-10 minutes here and there while I put away laundry in the next room or am sitting in the same room? 30 minutes? I'm reading conflicting things and would like some advice :) thanks! :)

My own experience and opinion is 5/10-15 minutes at a time. 4-8 months was the time when I could leave my DS safely in the bouncer or jumparoo or seated on the floor w toys because he wasn't going anywhere. Now at 11m although he can play with his toys independently he wants to go go go and needs constant supervision.

I would not leave a 4 month old alone in a room without an adult present ever. Even when I had to use the bathroom, I brought the PNP or the bouncer into the room and put DC on the floor so they would not fall or get hurt. If you have to do laundry can you put them in the bouncer, swing, PNP so they can be in the same room with you? I would only expect about 5-10 minutes of "self entertaining" i.e. taggies book "reading," soft toys, etc. But even then I would still talk to DC and narrate what you are doing. For example, this is a red shirt, it belongs to daddy. Watch me fold it. Oh this shirt has stripes, it is blue and belongs to your big brother, name.

Thanks... Sorry I wasn't clear... I never leave them unattended while in another room (bathroom or putting laundry away) unless they are safe in their crib or pnp playing :)
