how much to feed a newborn?

hannah is 11 days old and I formula feed. I've been giving her 3oz every 3 hours but she seems desperate for more. Is 4 oz at 11 days old too much?

Re: how much to feed a newborn?

I was always told to feed on demand. I would give it to her if she wants more.

Re: how much to feed a newborn?

really, there is no rhyme or reason to how to feed a newborn.. if they want more, give it to them.. I was told you cannot overfeed a newborn, they'll let you know when they're done..

By 2 wks, Nikolas was eating 4 oz a feeding.. now at 2 months he eats between 5-6 oz a feeding... some kids just eat more than others!

Re: how much to feed a newborn?

Steven has been on 4 ozs ever 4 hours since he was one week old (he was born at almost 10 lbs). Sometimes he takes more, but only 1/2 ounce or so. The pedi told me to increase the formula in 1/2 ounce increments. I noticed that Steve would want 4.5 oz certain times of the day and other times, he wouldn't eat the full 4 oz.

So, I would say maybe try 3.5 oz and if she leaves some, then she leaves some. My thought is that I would rather waste it then have him be hungry. I know the Stevie likes more at his 4 and 8 o'clock feedings and he eats less during the middle of the night.

Re: how much to feed a newborn?

I would check w/ her pediatrician first. 11 days old seems young to up to 4 oz I think. I think we only started 4 oz after he was 1 month old.

Re: how much to feed a newborn?

my ped just told me to feed on demand- so if she wants more, give it to her- Maddie is 6 weeks and takes between 4 1/2- 5 ounces... sometimes though she only wants 3 ounces- they eat until they are full...
