how much to spend on a first communion gift for my godson?

My godson is making his first communion in a few weeks, and I'm not sure what to get him or how much is appropriate to spend.

I was thinking of giving either money (but how much?) or a savings bond + something else (b/c honestly, a savings bond is uninteresting to a kid and he should get something cool from his godmother).

Any ideas? What price range is appropriate? $150? $200? $100?

I'm lost... This would actually be easier if it were a girl (my nieces are younger, but I already know what to get them!) -- but for a boy I'm lost. That's why I'm leaning toward money + something fun.

I wanted my Goddaughter to wear something special on that day, from me, so I asked my sis what she neeeded, and I got her a pair of beautifil earrings.
Im also getting her a bond and maybe another gift (maybe a nice watch or nice bracelet that she can use for years to come). - my sis and I got gorgeous Bulova watches for our communion from our Godparents, so that came to my mind..I use it to this day..

She's my twin sister's daughter so I wouldnt compare how much I spend.

MAybe do a combo of things also?

I was thinking of getting him a $100 savings bond and a $ 50 gift certificate to Toys R Us.

Should I up the gift certificate amount, or that good? I don't want to be cheap, but I don't want to spend way too much either.

I am planning to ask my cousin (his mom) if there is anything he really wants... if so, maybe I'll get that for him instead.

the $100 bond is a great idea.

although we want to be "cool" Godparents, for his communion, Id spend that other $50 on a sentimental gift that he can appreciate years from now as something special from his Godmother..

maybe ask his mom what she thinks?

and if ya still wanna be cool, im sure you can stick some "fun stuff" in the bag, little chachka toys, action figures?, I just wouldnt make it a bulk of the gift..

I gave my friends son a savings bond and a gift card to toys r us...something for now and something for later. She loved it and so did he!!

I wanted to do something sentimental, but to be honest - I really don't think it will work. They're just not "that" kind of family (and I don't mean that in a bad way). I'd have to come up with something REALLY good for that to work, and I just don't have any ideas.

I already know what my nieces will get for their communions -- but as for my godson, no ideas.

I'd love to hear some, though!

It's tradition that the godparents give their godchild a crucifix on their first communion. But if you don't want to do that, I would give them a savings bond and something else, something they'll actually enjoy and appreciate at the age of 7.

My mom got my cousin stuff from Bath & Body Works and she LOVED it! It was something different from everyones cash or check or savings bond.

Do you think in addition to something else (either something fun or a bond), a nice cross necklace would be appropriate for a boy?

I mean a nice one he could always have... do they make ones for boys?

I think i gave my nephews each a metal then the received their communion.

I bought my goddaughter her entire communion ensemble - shoes, veil, headband, dress etc. and it came out to about $200

on the actual day i am going to give her a pretty card lol

my parents bought her a diamond cross.

We are having the same issue.

DH's godson/our nephew is making his communion and we have no idea what to get him.

Little girls are so much easier!!

I think your idea is good. Something for him now and something for him later. I'm going to steal it and suggest it to DH.
