How much would you expect to pay?
My FH owns a handyman business on the side from his dayjob, mostly small home repairs, etc. He has been working on this one job since August. It is basically a complete house renovation.
So far he has:
Resanded/sheetrocked/patched/paintedall the walls in all the rooms.
Complete kitchen demo
Complete basement demo
Installed all new appliances and cabinetry
Installed all new bathroom fixtures and ran new plumbing
New front door, doors in all bedrooms
Painted ceilings
New moulding in all rooms (floor and ceiling)
Installed new ceiling fixtures
Deck demo
Among other improvements. This was an inherited property and the people are just going to sell it.
So, my question is, if you were to pay HOURLY for this work, what would you expect to pay, or would you have preferred a set labor cost? Unfortunately, this project has snowballed from a couple small adjustments into a complete reno. He certainly did not expect to still be doing this 4 months later. FH is licensed and insured. He's averaging about 20 hours per week. He is also laying out for the material.

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
I personally would never pay anyone by the hour. Only for the job.
He needs to charge for all the materials at least at cost, including expenses like rental, gas to get them.
Doesn't he know how to charge per job? Like installation of a celiing fan, etc.. $200 or something like that.
Kitchen gut job and labor $10K maybe more, maybe less.
1/ he needs to have a pre-set idea of how much to charge
2/ make sure the people are on board with the additional cost. They may not realize how much it's going to cost them.
Rough estimate: $30-50K (low range to higher range) for labor WITHOUT the materials but I don't know the size of the house and the state it was in and what state it is now. Was it a gut job in a lot of rooms like basement, etc.. Did he install flooring? And what type? Etc..

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
Also, will he have to wait until it is sold to get paid...Regardless of the amount I would have him ask for some money now, esp with the holidays coming up. Was it ever discussed?

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
My friend uses a handyman that does work like this and he charges 250 a day, no matter what it is.
So 250 a day plus the materials? If you figure he works 9-5 with a one hour lunch break it works out to 35.71/hr.
Does that help?

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
Thanks ladies...to clarify, she actually wanted to pay hourly; he normally does an estimate and charges either per job or per day. He doesn't have to wait till the house is sold to get paid. The woman's a wackadoo.
He is charging her $25 an hour. He averages about 4 hours per day give or take. He doesn't charge for gas. She does reimburse the materials.

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
right now my brother in law is being paid $200 a day for work like that. For a job outside of family usually charges $325-$400 depending on location of the job.

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
I'd pay a licensed and insured handyman $300 a day.

Re: How much would you expect to pay?
I would never pay by the hour for a job that large
my dh also owns a home improvement company and would charge by the job
for example - he charges between 2-3 a linear foot for the crown moulding
5-7/sq foot for ceramic tile
2-3/ sq foot for painting, etc
materials are always extra, he quotes for labor only
