How often are you contacted for a job from olas??

Is there a better way?

Just got certified in Art education. haha i know the joke is on me. but that is what i wanted to do.

so far the only time i have gotten interviews is when i knowsomeone in the district or walked into the school.

Those were not for art positions though those were for ta positions in the districts i would eventually like to teach in.

any advice would be helpful i know alot of us are in the same boat. thanks!!!

I've never been contacted from OLAS, and don't know anyone who has. The one interview that I had from an OLAS posting was because the principal had already had my resume.

ETA: I am Childhood Ed and there are a TON of us applying for the same jobs. There is probably fewer people in Art. Good luck :)

I've been contacted a couple of times.

I got my current job (where I started 4 years ago) through OLAS.

I was contacted through OLAS for my current job. Now, however, my school no longer uses OLAS due to the cost.

I think with certain certification areas, they just get swamped with thousands of applicants for one posting. I met with my former HS principal, who is now Superintendent, and he said they like OLAS because of how specific you can get in your search to take 2,000 applicants down to say, 20. They can basically search for everything they want, what certifications, how many years teaching experience, etc. If you aren't what they are looking for from the start, your resume doesn't make it through the search process to stand a chance to get looked at.

I've also known of numerous positions where the district had an internal candidate in mind and they just post it on OLAS because they have to. At my friend's school, the principal received 1,500 applications for one position, interviewed about 50, took it down to 6 to do demo lessons, 3 to meet with personnel, and went with an internal candidate after months of this process.

As for a better way, there are many districts that don't use OLAS and have their own online application on their websites. Great Neck, Manhasset, Locust Valley, those are just 3 that I can think of right away. Make sure to look for those districts so you don't miss their postings :)

I don't know if things have changed, but IMO, OLAS is where resumes go to die! I think that's where districts post when they already have someone in mind, but legally have to post the job.

Before leaving to have DD I got my job through a NY Times Ad. Even now, I am trying to get back into teaching and submitted multiple applications through OLAS - not a single call back.

When I started applying 5 years ago, I must've applied to 60 jobs on OLAS...never got a single interview. Don't know anyone who has. I got my job 5 years ago b/c i subbed in a district for a few months, got a leave replacement that april, and was then hired that summer for a tenure track position in the fall. I was VERY lucky.

Out of the at least 50 jobs I've applied for on OLAS, I've been contacted three times.

One was to be a substitute teacher.

The second one was a district in Westchester that I applied to. They asked me to come in the next day while they were doing many interviews for a probationary position. I presume somebody dropped out and they wanted to fill an interview slot.

The third time was a LI district that didn't advertise. They called me in to do a demo for a teacher who was going on maternity leave earlier than expected.
