how often do you feed your dog?

my puppy is ten months old now...i still feed him puppy food twice a day. when hes a year old im going to change his food but can i feed him once a day then? hes a 50 lb lab mix

I wouldn't. My dog is a 6 yr old lab and I still feed him twice a day.

Large breeds can tend to have bloat or twist their stomachs when they eat too much at once. That's why I divide his food into 2 meals.

Besides....I wouldn't want to eat just once a day!

I have a labradoodle, and we just leave the food out all day. She sometimes will eat a little in the morning if I put some cheerios on top, and then she usually will eat the rest after we eat dinner. We don't have a problem with her over eating, she only will eat when she is hungry.

I have always fed twice a day. I personally would never go down to once a day.

8 mnth old pup. AM & PM feed.

2 year old dog (hes small) and we feed him half a cup twice a day..

Once my dog was past a year, he went to once a day (a little more than a cup). He's a small cavalier. He's never been the best eater.

We had problems with Brinkley vomiting (empty stomach syndrome) and gas so we tried different schedules. What finally worked for us was 6am breakfast, 5pm dinner, 9pm snack.

I agree about bloat. We soak their food for five minutes and put their Kongs in their bowls to slow them down.

We used to feed Kasey 2x a day when she was a puppy. Then when she was about 2 years old she wasn't interested in her food when I'd put it down in the morning. At night, she would happily eat and everything else seemed normal. So I took it as a cue that she was ready to eat just 1x a day. We haven't had any issues with her eating since!

I have a puppy and a 9 year old dog. I feed them both 2 x a day. I just divide the food in half

My vet said it wasn't good to feed them all at once, something about their stomachs getting twisted

Almost 5 yr old Golden and he gets fed twice a day.

We feed them whenever the bowls are empty, I leave them filled all day and they eat whenever they are hungry, unless I throw in whatever is leftover for dinner, which is not often. We have used this since our first dog, luckily, the other two just followed her lead so overeating/excited eating was never really an issue. Oh, and they both get one bone in the am and one in the pm, and sometimes a "bonus bone" if they have been really really good

I only feed my dog once a day. He usually only eats half anyway.

twice a day wet food with dry food being available to them whenever they want... .

5 year old golden gets fed dry food 2x a day.

I feed my large breeds 1X per day at the advice of my vet(at the time) One of my dogs shovels it down...the other will sometiomes leave half of it for the next day

I have a golden retriever which weighs around 60 lbs, my husbands parents breed them professionally. We have always fed her twice a day and we started mixing her puppy food with adult food around 6 months old and was on strait adult food by 9 months. I would not suggest feeding once a day, the post about a twisted stomach is completely correct and you dont want that. My dog eats really fast so we put spoons on top of her food so that it slows her down. I would also not suggest just leaving food out all day in her bowl, that will promote you wanting to keep the bowl full and can cause the dog to be over weight. You also want to keep the dog on a schedule, just like you would a baby. Good luck!
