how often do you have to re-seal your granite?

We were told to re-seal our granite when it was installed but I can't remember how often you're supposed to do this.

Also, the sealant I bought at HD at the time seems to be a real PITA....you have to clean the counters, wait 24 hrs to fully dry, apply the sealant and then wait another 24 hrs before using. I can't go 2 days without using my kitchen

So, for those with granite counters, how often are you re-sealing and if you are, which products are you using?

seriously, why am I finding all this extra work to do?! I already am behind finding that lawyer, now I need to remember to do this

my parents have granite for 6 years and have never resealed it - it still looks perfect
