How often do you kids get sick at daycare?

did your child get sick in daycare if you put DC in on or before 3 months of age? In DSs 3rd week of daycare, he got really bad congestion and is on the nebulizer and was out 2 days last week and probably all this week. DH took him to the doc and said he got a lecture on how a 12 week old should not be in daycare and we're asking for it and the kid will be in his office every 2 weeks and out sick more than he's there. I know kids get sick in daycare--duh! But does he want to pay my mortgage and I'll take him out? So really, how often did your kids get sick?

When Ryan got RSV at 4 months, the Dr. warned me that he'd average about 2 colds a month being in daycare. Given the colds last up to 10 days, that's 20 days/ month sick. The Dr. was right on w/that. At 10 months now he's definitely been sick more then well. RSV caused lingering chest issues for him with recurring colds. He kept getting ear infections so we got tubes in his ears (which was a HUGE help!). He's had pink eye, stomach bugs, you name it he's just about had it.

The Dr. also told me he will be one of THE healthiest kindergardeners and wont be out sick when it really counts, so I'm hoping he was right w/that too.

I have to say that was kinda mean of your Dr. to say that, not everyone makes their salary where we have choices like they probably do

I put her in at 4 months, only three days a week. I EBF for the first three months, then supplemented with formula, then she was on all formula at four and half months.

She NEVER got sick at home, yet she got sick every two-three weeks from being at day care.

Also, she has been out of day care for 2 months because of my surgery. I could not afford to get sick or an infection after heart surgery. Grace has not been sick ONCE! I hate that she is in day care. YES, it does get better. Yes the first year of day care they build their immunity, yadda yadda.

Personally, I love having her home all the time, I love not catching all the germs she brings home from day care. I have to work P/T, so it is what it is. Although, she has not gotten sick as often as she has gotten older. HTH

First, I think your DS's doctor is rude.

We didn't put Andrew in day care until he was 11 months old, but in the beginning it felt like he was getting sick all the time. He got pink eye, roseola, bronchiolitis fairly quickly. I was concerned. But then it was really just an occasional cold/cough and pink eye.

ETA: ear infections occasionally too

Cailen went in at 8 weeks - and DH was the one who got him sick. He was out for one day his 2nd week at daycare, and then he had fever there 3 weeks ago, and was out for 2 days. He's had a lingering cough since before daycare, believe it or not.

I read somewhere that kids get sick once a month... I think he will get stronger each week though!

What dr. tells a parent a child cant go to daycare before 12 weeks????

That was really insensitive of your doc to say that! I put my dd in around 2 months, yes she got sick but mostly just colds, pinkeye once, ear infection once, no flu. I guess maybe once a month or so, not constantly. I think like others said at least she'll build up an immunity so she won't get as sick later on.

Thanks ladies. I'm going back to the doc with him on Wednesday. The same guy my DH saw. We'll see how it goes. There are 8 other great docs in the practice--I don't need to see him ever again.

DD was six months when I put her in daycare & got a bad cold once, the first week. She also had a stomach virus once. She was in daycare a total of five months, now we're home for the summer. She doesn't seem too prone to getting sick.

BTW, I have friends who are SAHM, and their kids get sick more than mine! Who knows?!

First off, I agree that your ped was rude. Is he going to pay your bills so that you can stay home with him til 12 weeks?

Second of all, no matter when your child goes to day care, pre school or kindergarten, they are going to have a rough first year and get sick.

Also, the first year my friend was teaching she got sick ALL the time.

DS started day care 3 wks ago and has been sorta sick once.

Once, my whole family caught a stomach bug 1-2 weeks ago but I was the source. DS had little to no problems. DS was out today b/c he was sick yesterday with a fever 101 and head cold but he's fine in less than 24 hours. We kept him home so he wouldn't get anyone else sick. He got my mom sick though...

He never complained when he was sick yesterday. Just had a runny nose.
