Re: How often do you read to your little ones ????Do you have a set time of day to do it ?

I don't think that BOOKS are the only thing you can read to your child nor do I think it is the only way to expand your child's vocabulary.

I was at a party the other day and walked around the buffet pointing to things saying "This is a bagel." "This is orange juice." This is a cookie." "This is a grape."

As an educator of children with special needs, I place more value in the comprehension of language and words than the decoding and encoding of those words. I have had students in my classes over the years who could decode and not comprehend and I have had students who could not decode and could comprehend. The latter fared much better in terms of testing and advancement.

I never established a set time but I read to him all the time. Now he asks me to read to him and in a way, he sets the time. I hardly say no to reading to him!

Every night before bed. 2-3 books but we really only started that in the last year or so. We weren't the parents that read to our infant.

I have to shamefully admit I am not as good with this with Kyle as I was with Jenna. With Jenna we would read a book every night before bed (and still sometimes do). Kyle I try my best but he is a wiggler and would rather eat the books at this stage (he's 1). We have plenty of board books that he "plays" with and I always try to point out pictures, words, etc... as he is playing. He already knows when I ask him to get a certain book "Kitty cat book" "Elmo book" which is which.

We read stories b/f naptime and bedtime - every day it varies but at least 2-3 books b/f each. We sometimes read books during the day depending on what is going on and his mood Chat Icon

I admit it doesn't happen every night, maybe 4-5 times a week. If we get home later than usual my goal is to feed them and put them to bed ASAP.

We read in the day (sometimes, not everyday) and we always always read before bedtime. Last night my husband read Hairy McLairy 3 times....better him than me!

On weekdays, usually just at bedtime. She picks 5 books that we read together, or she reads to me. She also has storytime at school before lunch.

On weekends, we'll periodically pick up books and read them throughout the day, but not consistently.

DS reads to me every night, and most nights, he likes to read to DD. He's only 6, but I think he's reading at around a 5th grade level, if not higher, so it's tricky getting books for him.... his interests are at a 6yo level, but his reading ability is much higher, so it's hard to find books that meet both of those requirements..... We read for about 15 minutes before bed, they alternate picking books.

I have books in the living room for them as well, when they pick one up we read it.

We really didn't start reading to them everynight until they were about 9 months old as part of a bedtime routine.

Same here.. but lately I've been trying to get a book or 2 in every night.

We read every day. I try to get in 10 books a day. Sometimes it is the same book 10 times in a row because he asks for it again, and again, and again.

I feel it is vital to read to children. DS has well over 1000 words at 20 months. He can say 4 word sentences and contractions. He even does plurals on his own. I feel that this is entirely due to the fact that I read to him every day.

I'm not so sure about that. A lot of parents read to their kids daily (including me) and they don't have that expansive of a vocab. at 20 months. My son was read to all the time and he didn't speak until he was 3. Just don't want anyone feeling guilty that their kids don't have 1000 words at 20 months, even though they are reading to them.

I agree, every child is different...we have friends with 2 kids, each skipped 2 grades in really good districts, they have well over 2,000 books seriously...they are very smart, i think the books helped but each child is different...

I also try to point things out and my son repeats it...I try to incorporate literacy into everything not with books only, I point to signs etc...

DS is 15 months and says about 20 words this far...IM not sure I even say 1,000 words...LOL

But thats great for the OP...

I started reading to them when they were about 8 weeks old. I just do it whenever we have a minute-I have a basket with books in the living room so I try to fit it in when I can. Though I am going to start it at night as part of their bedtime routine
