How protective of your baby are you? And I mean about germs.
I have three family members with babies. Two are fine with passing the baby but one puts everyone off from even looking at the baby. The latter one makes you feel like it is possible to LOOK at the baby wrong or that you are going to get the baby sick by making eye contact. Okay, slight exaggeration, but can you be TOO overprotective of a baby?

Re: How protective of your baby are you? And I mean about germs.
I was sort of protective with Andrew when he was born. If you had a cold you were NOT allowed around him until he was 12 weeks old. Everyone who touched him had to was their hands first for the 1st 4 months or so. I'm a nurse so I'm a little germ phobic to anyway, but I also believe that exposure to germs builds up immunity, but not in newborns.

I DON'T like to have my baby passed around at social gatherings, like he's a hot potato. Some people tried doing it at his christening...luckily that ended quickly.

I agree I dont like this either- at his christening they started passing him and he started crying. As soon as I took him he stopped he just needed a familiar face for a while. This past Sunday it was my nephews christening and he wasnt passsed around as much and he was much better- he was happy and content.

I don't mind family members holding the baby (except for one uncle and his girlfriend) I keep purell on hand and ask everyone to use it before holding her. Most of them actually are so used to that by now that they do it automatically I don't have to ask. But I feel like all the germs I am bringing home from work from my students and all the germs that she is exposed to in daycare that there is not much that I can do.

When marissa was younger I used to have purell or some type of hand sanitiser in my bag. Also I would make everyone wash hands before handling her but most people did this automatically.

I wont pick up a baby without washing my hands first, and when my baby is born, I'm not going to let anyone pick my baby up until they wash their hands. Too many germs.

This is how I am normally. I am OCD when it comes to hand washing. So it is without a doubt that when I am going to hold a baby, I wash my hands. But I swear, this one mother gives this glare if anyone starts to walk in the direction of the baby. It has become a joke between DH and I at this point, but seriously, if anyone walks BY the baby for a napkin or to get a drink, you'd think you'd have to scrub up because you may pass the stroller!
Please don't think I am judging this mom because I know when I am a mother, I will be all about washing hands. But it's to the point that we don't even want to go near the baby because she's almost overboard.

Re: How protective of your baby are you? And I mean about germs.
I thought I would be very overprotective, but the only off limits people were strangers, and germ infested kiddies. Most people washed their hands when he was very little (up to 4 months maybe?), but not at my request... most people I know just know better.
I cleaned everything he came in contact with for a while, but it just gets to be silly after a while. I mean if I can clean it I will, but he eats his shoes and licks walls for goodness sake!
BTW, He has never been sick but for once last winter.

the first 6 weeks I was a bit anal. after 12 weeks I let family and friends manhandle DS...lol...strangers are a no-no though!! I just tell him that he has a cold and should not be touched, so I don't offend anyone
