How religious are you?
I realize that these options are vague (although hopefully not offensive), as everyone has a different interpretation of what each of them means. For example, to me, "very religious" means adhering pretty strictly to a religion's precepts, but I'm sure others would see it differently. Anyway, I'm just asking you to pick based on the way you would personally describe yourself, regardless of what religion you are.
If you're so inclined, please explain why you chose the option that you chose.

Re: How religious are you?
I picked "somewhat religious." I have a very strong Jewish identity, and consider myself a conservative Jew. DH and I follow some of the laws of Kashrut (Kosher laws) by having a mostly Kosher home, but we don't follow to the letter, and I'm not strictly kosher outside of my home. I used to go to synagogue a lot more, when I lived at home before getting married. Although DH is more observant than me in some ways, he did not grow up going to shul as often, and we live near his family, so we just don't tend to go on Shabbat, where I did with my family. I think that will change when we have kids. I light Shabbat candles sometimes, observe the kosher laws for Passover fully, and have mezzuzahs on all my doors. I do not pray a lot outside of synagogue, and I often say that I am more culturally Jewish than actually religious.
To most of our friends who DH grew up with, DH and I are very religious. To our friends from college, who are mostly Orthodox Jews, we are pretty non-observant, so it's all relative!

Re: How religious are you?
I put very religious but that is in comparison to people like my friends. Compared to my parents I am a heathen
I attend church every Sunday, pray every day, do the rosary pretty regularly, go to confession once a year, fast on Fridays during lent, no meat on Fridays year round (this I break for special occasions) and I believe in about 98% of what my Church preaches.

I'd put myself somewhere between moderately and very.

Not at all religious, but I strongly believe in the fact that there is "something bigger" than us out there, which makes me somewhat spiritual, although I don't pray.

Re: How religious are you?
I picked not religious. My husband is an atheist and we are raising our children with no religion and I have found myself leaning more toward that. I could have chosen spiritual I suppose b/c I'm still not quite sure there isn't something bigger than us but my scientific mind tells me there isn't.

This is me too. Except I am really bad about going to confession, and I don't agree with the church about 10% of the time.
I do try to do my best to keep the politics of men and what my Catholics beliefs are very separate and not turn my back on my faith because of decisions that humans make. If that makes sense.

Re: How religious are you?
I am primarily spiritual. I am Catholic and was married in a Catholic church. I believe about 85% of what the church has taught me. I have a strong desire to become more religious, but that entails going to church, practicing lent, etc.
I do want my future DC to grow up w/a sense of religion and faith. Although I also plan to educate my children on all religions.

Re: How religious are you?
I put moderate.
We go to church most weeks (although lately not much), I pray a lot, I really believe, I'm not skeptical, follow rules around Lent, agree with a lot of what the Catholic church says, take about Jesus and God with my kids regularly.

Re: How religious are you?
It seems like less and less people have religion in their lives nowadays......I find it sad (and I don't mean this in an insulting way to anyone!)....it gives me so much peace that I can't imagine not having it and feel bad for those who do not experience it.

I am not responding to be defensive or to start any debate...just to give you my perspective.
I can completely understand your feelings b/c I have people in my life that feel the same.
For me I was raised with a lot of religion and for me that made me have a lot of fear and guilt. For me it never brought me peace. Over the past 10-15 years I have moved more and more away from the church and now completely away from any kind of religion and I feel that I finally have peace in my life. I am content to raise my children without God and religion. What they decide as adults is their free choice but for my DH and I we don't wish to influence their decisions.
Again, this is no kind of attack on religious people or the peace they feel from it. I just wanted to explain how I get peace from not having religion b/c of the unrest religion, God and the church brought me.

But that's what works for you. For me and DW, we grew up religious, went to church every Sunday. I was actually the only boy in my Boy Scout troop to earn the Religious Award....
After I spent time learning more about organized religion, and personal religion, I feel bad for those who are religious, and it gives me so much peace not being religious. It gives life much more sense to me. At this point in my life, I couldn't imagine living a life deeply rooted in religion.
It's all how you perceive things. Neither side, nor anywhere in the middle is wrong, it's just different. The only problems that arise are when people are angry and hateful to anyone who believes differently. As long as everyone believes in what works for them, and leaves everyone else and their beliefs alone, the world would be a much better place.
Religion doesn't make the world a better place, religious tolerance does.

Re: How religious are you?
I understand what you all are saying and again, I mean no disrespect by it whatsover. Religion (or lack thereof) is a personal thing. It's just so deeply rooted in me that I can't imagine being without. My DH isn't as religious as me, but I still love him

Re: How religious are you?
I pickedd very religious. The older I get, the more thankful I am to God and the more I show it in various ways. I think being a good Catholic is more than just going to church and I try to remember that and live by it in my daily life. And I've totally turned into my grandma - if something is wrong with someone you know, I will ask their name and then pray for them! My grandma had a prayer list a mile long!

No, I totally see what you mean. Just as leighdvm (and obviously billions of others) finds peace in religion, and feels bad for people who don't feel that same peace (which I find totally understandable), you find peace simply in this life, without religion, and you feel bad for people who don't feel that kind of peace (also totally understandable in my book).

Re: How religious are you?
i am very spiritual but refuse to marry into any particular faith and organized structure. I find that all religious faiths have become corrupted due to man's inability to not be influenced. I know it sounds strange but I can't understand how people go by a book that was written by man as god's truth when man distorts truth since man is not perfect. We have tossed out so many biblical writings in all religions because it went against the social norm of the time. I mean thousands of scriptures that are shelves if not destroyed because it didn't gel with that higher power in the faith at that particular time. I don't trust it. I also see it has such a harmful thing since there are people who are blinded by their faith.
I don't buy the whole jesus as son of god and savior and praying to him. I only can accept he was a prophet and that is it. We are all son's and daughters of god and to make him specialized bothers me. I don't like the sense that in the catholic religion and even jewish religion it says "do not pray to a golden idol" yet what do you see in churches and/or temples. Things gilded in gold or marble and riches/luxuries. Religion is not wealth and is not a business its there to guide and inspire us. To hold us accountable for our actions and in the end hopefully transition us to something different other then just worm food.
Just my opinion.
