How to ask a client to write a review

DH has a small business and potential clients will often Google him to read reviews. He has some but, of course, would like more.

He wants to ask clients at the end of the job when they have expressed how happy they are but is it pushy ask? Also, can he request particular websites to post a review?

Just want to come across as NOT pushy as possible.

I have heard of new businesses doing that. When a customer has clearly expressed how happy they are with the services provided, I think it's fine to say something like " I am trying to grow my business, would you mind share your opinion on yelp etc".

Maybe if he doesn't want to come out and ask them directly, have them fill out some kind of satisfaction form and have that written on there at the bottom.

This is totally appropriate.

I agree. I don't think it's pushy at all. I've been asked to review businesses I've used and never though twice about, and I've asked clients to do the same for me and have never gotten a negative reaction for asking (at least not that I know of Chat Icon )

I don't think it's pushy to ask. I think the key is to ask in a way that doesn't put them on the spot, and in a way that is not demanding.

If the client is active on email, that is maybe a good way to ask, if you don't feel comfortable asking in person.

But even in person, I will always wait for a good moment to ask (such as after the closing of a sale/purchase, when the client is hopefully happy!), and then say something like, "If you were happy with my services and would feel comfortable doing so, I would appreciate it if you could post a review [specify where/how]. I am looking to grow my business and it always helps to have reviews and testimonials from satisfied clients."

Most people understand that service-oriented businesses can be competitive and are glad to write a review. But they might not have thought of it on their own or known what to do; so if you don't ask, you don't get!

But if for some reason somebody didn't follow through and write a review, I wouldn't repeatedly ask and nag them about it. That would be too aggressive, imo. It should be a nicely phrased request, that leaves the ball in their court, but not a high pressured thing.

ETA - I think it's fine to for your husband to ask for clients and customers to review him on specific sites. I always say "I am getting a lot of business from x site lately, so it would be great if you could post something there."

I agree, it's ok to ask straight up, but not to be pushy.

I ask customers constantly for reviews of the company I work for now. After a job is completed or a service is performed I send them a thank you note with a survey and a labeled envelope for them to mail back. We also e-mail them a similar letter with a link to any of our pages on google, yelp, yahoo, facebook etc and ask them to review us there. We have a quarterly contest and offer $50-$100 to a random customer that does a review for us so it's an incentive. We also offer a discount off the next service or a small gift card if they refer a friend and they hire us.
