How to avoid being a complete basket case
Right now I am sitting and waiting to hear back from the dr.'s office. One of the teachers on my team was diagnosed with Fifth's disease, to which I am NOT immune. I had to have my blood drawn to see if I come up positive for it and then again in another 8 weeks. I was told I would have results by Friday. Still waiting . . .
I was reading my pregnancy week by week book and right there in week 16 are causes for late miscarriages (after first trimester) and right there of course is fifth's disease- which can also cause stillbirth and some other complications.
between this and reading other bad news posts I am a complete nervous wreck.
I try to avoid reading about anything negative, but curiosity always gets the best of me.
Every twinge, ache- any sensation that is "new" makes me immediately scared that something is wrong.
I want to enjoy pregnancy and not be terrified all of the time that something is going to go worng, but I really don't think I know how to do that.
How do the rest of you avoid negative thought patterns and just enjoy being pregnant?

Re: How to avoid being a complete basket case
Hang in there. I'm not pregnant now but can answer.
The way I handled it was to realize it was competely out of my hands. You do all you can - eat well, rest, get some exercise & that's all you can do. You do your part.
Typically I'm an underreactor but went through some stressful times during my pregnancies. Stressing isn't going to help the situation. I know it's easier said then done. If you have issues with anxiety or tend to react more, talk to your doctor. Stop reading the internet & talk to him/her more. The internet is filled with the "what ifs" & the tragedies. They're not posting how many countless pregnant women come in contact with Fifth's & don't get it.
Start thinking of it this way - Every cramp means your uterus is expanding. If you haven't already "popped' that's coming soon (when your uterus no longer sits in your pelvic area & moves upward). You're about to move into maternity clothes if you haven't already.
In the meantime, sending all of my best thoughts your way.

Re: How to avoid being a complete basket case
I was exposed to Fifths Disease about 3 weeks ago, and to be honest, I was more annoyed than worried. I spoke to a midwife, and to my GP and they didn't seem concerned in the least...
There were 4 pregnant women at a playdate with the kid who had Fifths, and we all got tested and none of us were immune.
I just think about how many happy healthy babies are born every single day against even stronger odds than the ones I know of...my best friends son had open heart surgery at 3 days old, if he can make it through, I can!!!
