How to calm a freaked out cat?
First and foremost- Bad Debbie...put this on pets!
Second- My cat has this habit of licking the plastic bags from the supermarket (our vet said this is fine and he likes it cause its coated with fish oil). Anyway, today I was home for lunch eating away when I heard a ton of noise from various spots in the house..I ran to see what was the matter and when I finally figured out where it was coming from it was my cat under the bed with the plastic bag stuck around his neck. I tried to get to him but I scared him and he ran from one end of the house to the other and went under another bed...unfortunatly in my current condition I was unable to get to the cat but I was able to cajole the bag off of him. Anyway, he is still under that bed and won't stop growling, hissing and crying and I can't get to him. Anyway I can calm him down? Is it best to just leave him and let him get re-settled? I fear that maybe he hurt a leg or something because he knocked into a TON of things running from one end of the house to the other AND I know he is scared because there is a pee trail Poor guy, I don't know what to do.

Re: How to calm a freaked out cat?
I tried three houses...the one next door wasn't home, either was across the street and the third neighbor...well he is in a wheelchair so he can not help.

I would leave him be, he'll calm down and come out when he's ready.

Call the police just explain it a non-emergency...if they have someone in the area to help...if they can stop by...

If he isn't in danger of choking, i'd leave him be until he calms down. Can you call DH to get it off him?

Let him calm down. If he's hurt and you try to move him, you could hurt him even more. When he's calmer, he'll come out.

I would let him settle. Just check on him later and see how he's doing.

Deb
I would just leave him for now and not even call to him. Just let it be quiet and let him feel safe again to come out. Maybe a bowl of food or water near him to entice him to come out?

poor guy! It's best to just leave him alone for a while. My cat freaks out on July 4th because the fireworks where I used to live are litterally a block from the apartment. She would spend the next two days crouched under the bed and would come out on her own.

Re: How to calm a freaked out cat?
Well I left the cat and went back to work...got home just now and he is still freaked out. I tried to come close to him but he started growling and hissing....guess I will just give him some more time and hope he is not hurt.

Aww Deb - I'm sorry - I guess at this point you're just going to have to wait for hubby to come home and move the bed or something.

Re: How to calm a freaked out cat?
he was FINALLY starting to do ok last night and was laying on my desk while I was at the computer...well the other kitty jumped up on the desk and scared the living daylights out of him....under the bed he went again hissing nad crying! I saw him this morning adn he was still skiddish but at least he was out from the bed. I think he might be suffering from post tramatic stress! I really do feel bad for him. He is obviously shaken from the whole thing.
Thanks for asking!

Re: How to calm a freaked out cat?
HE will be fine. My cats get freaked out with things like that on occassion. If he wants or needs your affections he will come to you. Sometimes it seems they prefer to calm down on there own.
I would though walk by where he is often and talk in calming voices so he knows all is calm in the outside world...lol...
He really will get over it. Cats attention spans are not that huge, he will probably forget sooner then you will.
poor kitty
