How to catch a student
who keeps writing nasty things about you in the textbooks?
Today I found the 4th book of a class set that has nasty things written about me.
DH and I tried matching up handwritting. There are so many "possibilities" but no definites. Nothing matches the way it should. They have ruined 4 textbooks. I would love to catch this person, without making it look obvious. Any advice?

Leave a post it in the text books saying... I see what you've been writing. Please see me after class.
And see who shows up!

Number the books and record who takes each book.

And if you can do it without them knowing, it would be great. I'd love for you to catch the little snot.

I actually do the same. Our library has the free book covers. I turn them to the other side so that they are completely white. Then I number them. Give them out in number order of the seat and just check them after each period.

I would definately keep it discreet with the numbering. I really like that idea.

I would do the same, number the books and assign them to a student...after each class check.

Sorry this is happening, how terrible that students are like this.
can you do a big "speech" on something like this happening, and the whole "right thing to do " that might make him/her feel guilty.
or is this middle school ?
youre awesome and dont take those words to heart.

Re: How to catch a student
I'd try the numbering thing. I had a 4th grader write a really nasty letter about one of the girls in the class & things they wanted to do & lots of curses, etc. I found the letter on the floor...I then said we're passing the letter to the principal & we're going to analyze the handwriting...I told them if no one came forward by dismissal it would go to the principal & parents would be called in, etc.
Two boys came forward & (parents still got involved), but I shamed them into it. I first started looking at all their handwriting....one letter, I think the D was very distinctive....
Sorry this is happening, don't let it get to you.
