Re: How to figure out STAR
Actually, it will only show up for your address if you are currently getting the basic STAR. You would look at the tax info and then click on "Exemption Detail" and it would list "basic STAR" as an exemption and give the amount of the exemptoin. This is what people can do if they are buying a home and want to verify the amount of the basic STAR (assuming the seller is getting the basic STAR, and not the enhanced, or other exemptions [VA, etc.]).
If you already live at your address and don't yet get the STAR, you can check to see what any other house in your school district gets (the exemption is the same for all houses within a school district, I believe).
Or you could just call the county assessor's office.

Agreed! Its not a % of the taxes. Its a set amount for the SD. So for instance in Smithtown, it was about $900+ last year yet this year 2011 it went to just over 1K. If I go on town of Smithtown website, under receiver of taxes I can look up my taxes for my address or that of any my neighbors. It will have my true taxes and any exemptions I have on my house and then what my taxes are after my exemptions. Not all town websites have this but its worth checking.
Or you can always call the town assessors office. We did this to verify the taxes when we bought the house.
