Re: How to know when to start looking??
I am no where near being in your situation, however, as a rule I am always looking and I send out resumes if I see something that could potentially be a good fit. In the meantime, I keep a folder on my laptop of all kinds of places and contacts I come across in the event that I need to start applying to places like crazy. It's tough out there and most fields, especially in the Long Island/NYC area, are extremely flooded.

Re: How to know when to start looking??
I think its time for me to start looking. Altho they have not laid anyone off, they are cutting majorly back on expenses and have even cut salaries.
It doesnt hurt to continously look. My husband is always looking, even when he really likes his job.
I,on the other hand, wait until the last possible second to look. With the way the economy is, I would definitely be proactively looking for other work

Re: How to know when to start looking??
I personally would stay. I mean, I was in your exact place a few months ago. I heard rumors about layoffs. Was told it wouldn't happen to me. Then it DID happen to me.
I got a NICE severence package- I can seriously take off for the next 6 months and not have to worry about a thing.
Bad thing is it's hard to find a job.
Good thing is I got unemployment too!
I mean, you can look and stick with your job. But chances are if you start another job, you will be more than likely the first to go. And then you get no severence package. They are based by how long you've been there and the company gives you X amount of dollars based on the years you worked. So, IMO with the way things are, I would stick with your current job and see what happens.
Good luck!
