How to know when you should see a specialist?

Hi Ladies,

First many hugs to all! Chat Icon I really appreciate all the support I've received on this board-I wish you all the best!

I went for a regular check-up yesterday and spoke to my DR about what's been happening and the miscarriages I've had. Just a re-cap-I had a MC back in the summer of 2008-I was 6-7 weeks along, then I had a M/C back in Oct 11 and had to have a D&C-I was almost 12 weeks along. In between these two, I had my son in 2009-normal pregnancy and delivery. The third M/C happened just last month-very early. I had a late period, took a test a few days after I was supposed to get AF and got a positive result. Three days later, spotting and then a period. So, I was a week late for my period.

I've had myself checked for blood clotting disorders-going for another last check for something else tomorrow. But, the other test results indicated I don't have anything like this.

Dr. says at this point, I could try again if I wanted to and not have anything else looked at, or I could have my uterus checked, or go to see a specialist.

I am really scared to try again and then lose another pregnancy, but I don't know if I am ready to go through all the testing with a specialist. She was not strongly urging me either way, but if I do have another M/C, then I think they will definitely encourage it.

I don't know what to do-maybe sharing some of your stories if you've gone through this? I just don't know what my next step should be and I am having trouble making that decision-DH is supporting me any way I feel at this point.

TIA for reading and for any input, or advice you can offer!

I was in a very similar situation as you. Had 2 mc's, a healthy pregnancy/baby followed by another mc. Had lots of testing done by my OB and not much was found other than MTHFR. I opted to see an RE pretty much for my own peace of mind. I figured that it wouldn't hurt to have another opinion and that I would feel more at ease knowing that I covered all of my bases. I felt like if I was on the fence I should just get another opinion because it was covered by insurance and there was really no harm in doing so. Plus, if I did wind up having another mc and didn't get another opinion I would always have wondered if I should have. Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I had two mc with 5 months. I have no children yet. I met with my regular OBGYN and he said it was up to me if I wanted to get tested. He doesnt not think anything is wrong since my first mc tissue was tested and it was an extra chromosome. I decided to go see a RE. I am going in two weeks. I just want another opinion and get tested. If there is something up, I def. want to know. In the end its your decision. I just feel that its not a bad idea to get another opinion.

Re: How to know when you should see a specialist?

It was my decision. I don't know if it was an inclining, but I just knew that something wasn't right. My OB chalked up my first three MC's to bad luck. With that, I sought an RE, dropped my OB and moved on to the long road of infertility that I'm pushing through now. I believe after two miscarriages (in a row), the statistics of another greatly increase. Even if you had a healthy pregnancy in between, I'd still seek some answers and appropriate testing to help prevent another. It may be a simple thrombophilia issue, immune issue, etc. Did you see a high risk or peri with you pregnancy? I would hope that your OB would suggest more monitoring or testing because of your history. Chat Icon
