How to protect from aggressive dogs/animals on a walk with my dog?
Any suggestions on how to keep my small dogs safe on their walk? Unfortunately there is an aggressive dog in our area (we can't avoid his house) and he has been seen loose. What stinks is my dogs must walk to go...trying to break them of the habit but it's hard. Any suggestions to keep my dogs safe should they get charged?

I would talk to the owner about their aggressive dog being loose.

carry a stick or umbrella...my Dad used to do this with his medium sized dog after she was attacked by a dog that got away from its owner...i have 2 small dogs & unfortunately can't carry anything cause my hands are full with leashes...my biggest fear is something coming at us on a walk

This is probably hard becasue you just moved in and I am sure you dont want to make enemies.. I would walk with a golf club or mace .. I know you dont want to hurt another animal but if its a matter of protecting your babies i dont think you have much of a choice.. Why cant you avoid the house? what kind of dogs are they ? is it right next door?

ITA... But I'd also try to speak to the owner - there are leash laws for a reason - and if he's aggressive - other dogs and people could get hurt.

I know the feeling DH just picks up our pug so fast when this happens and we will look over at the house to see if anyone is outside and usually not

Re: How to protect from aggressive dogs/animals on a walk with my dog?
My MIL has a yorkie who has been attacked by neighbor's larger (loose) dogs.
For this reason, when they go on walks, she carries a large wooden stick, so that way if any dog threatens her dog and she's not strong enough to fend it off, she uses the stick as a form of defense for herself and her dog.
With DH and I, when we walk our yorkie, we will pick her up and wait for the larger dog to disappear, or we will walk away in the opposite direction until it is safe to put her down to walk again.

Re: How to protect from aggressive dogs/animals on a walk with my dog?
If I truly thought a dog would attack, I'd want something that could cause it short-term physical pain. I'd look into some kind of humane spray with a good distance.
You may be surprised hearing that from me, the dog lover I am, but to me causing an aggressive dog pain without permanent damage is worth my safety and the safety of my dogs. I wouldn't trust in a stick for a large, aggressive dog. They wouldn't even feel it. My dogs have put dents in my walls during play and they don't even notice.
If it's frequent and the owner is not addressing the dog's aggression issues, I would absolutely report an off-leash dog. It's not safe for anyone - the dog, the owner, all the neighbors. The people I know with aggressive dogs are not doing everything they should be, and have convinced themselves that it's an unsolvable problem. They need a dose of reality before something terrible happens.

Re: How to protect from aggressive dogs/animals on a walk with my dog?
I would NOT suggest trying to hit an aggressive dog with any object it is a VERY good way to get attacked. You do not know this dog's history and could provoke it to be more aggressive.
Additionally I find it VERY disturbing to hear that any one would strike any animal with an object. There is no reason to hit an animal aggressive or not. I do not think you can say you are an animal lover then talk about hitting an animal. Take your aggression out where it belongs on the owner that is failing to keep their pet and the public safe.

Ane I walk my dog with my 2 year old daughter you bet I will kill anything that trys to hurt her.

No I am no kidding you! The best way to get bit by an aggressive animal is to provoke it!!!! I am not suggesting putting yourself at risk but from I have read so far on this thread the owner has not been talked to...as for you killing anything that is your business.

If you or your animal is getting attacked . I mean ATTACKED not approached by an animal what do you suggest someone should do? I would never strike anything that wasnt striking me first.. I would have to be left with no choice.. I am not suggesting to just go up to an unleashed animal and provoke it but you bet I will protect myself and my family

I agree there is no reason to hit an animal - HOWEVER - if it is an aggressive one that is attacking.... I'll protect my own, by what ever means necessary.
I AM an animal lover, and yes I can say that in the same sentence and tell you that if it meant protecting my dogs or cats, I will strike at what ever is attacking - animal or human.
If my dogs were getting attacked - do you expect me to just sit back and do nothing? Try to yell at at the dog? Sorry - but I would hope any pet owner would protect their pets.

Honestly, I understand what the poster was trying to say and while it's not a smart idea to attack a dog when you are in the situation things change. I was walking my dog (70lb lab) this winter. Out of nowhere a huskie came up behind us knocked me to the side and started to mount and bite my dog's face. I kicked the dog so hard that it yelped and stepped back. I NEVER have ever come close to hitting or kicking any animal out of anger, but out of fear it just happened. I was 6 months pregnant and this dog was threatening me and my dog. In the end it's not something I regret in the least bit. I'm 100% sure that this dog would have hurt my dog had it not been scared away. A man shoveling the snow came to help us with his shovel, but I didn't think the dog needed to be scared anymore and was on his way home. A few days later I did speak to the owner (I knew where the dog lived) about making sure the dog was tied up when they left it in the backyard, shocker, they didn't seem to think it was a big deal as he wasn't "aggressive".

You need to speak with the owner. If that doesn't work call the police (non emergency) and see if there is anything they can do. Dogs must be leashed in NYS.

Owner was addressed in passing and in our case, this case, it was a one time occurence. Def not saying it's a common thing I see. But it did give us a wake up call b/c the odds always remain that in the event of a large dog getting loose or getting out of the yard/home, my small dogs need us to have a way and a plan to defend them. This I only started thinking about recently as my old neighborhood I rarely saw loose dogs or random wild animals.
I am an animal lover but I have heard of stories where small dogs literally get eaten alive and killed. So like everyone else said, in the event my dog is actually getting harmed, I would have to protect them. My plan is to avoid the senario but be as prepared as possible. Ideal things are a horn, screaming, even mace but in the event none of those things work, what then? No one here is saying they will go beat the dog down after the fact once their pet is free. That would be cruel and inhumane and not their place to do! That would be where the law is called in to take control. What I do hear everyone above saying is that if their dog is in the actual JAWS of another dog, they would do what they had to do to get it free and protect it. WHo wouldn't do that? So you see, it's two different senarios. I don't think anyone is saying they are going to go around randomly hitting or harming dogs that haven't harmed them or their pets. But that they are prepared and this is how.
If I kept seeing the dog loose, I would address it again but the reality is dogs get out of yards and through screen doors and even diligent owners can't always forsee some events. However, as I said before, in our case, it was a one time incident so far but it definitely has me on my toes and also it could be very easy for an aggressive dog to pull away from it's owner even if it is leashed.
Also would like to be prepared to defend against stray dogs or rabid raccoons, etc, that have no owners to "talk to" so there are many reasons I was curious how people protect their pets.

No but house is close by so dog can see us when we come out no matter what.
DH did address the issue and it was a one time occurrence but it def has us wanting to be prepared and on our toes and have a plan. B/c dogs do get out of yards, do break through screen doors, and do pull away from their owners even when on a leash. In addition, stray dogs do pose a risk as do random wild animals, so we just want some suggestions or stories to help us figure out how to fend off an attack from any animal.

You are walking your dog on the street and a loose, aggressive dog charges both of you head-on. The dog bites and attacks your dog. There is no one else around, especially not the owner. What do you propose you do?

Re: How to protect from aggressive dogs/animals on a walk with my dog?
I can't believe how iresponsible the owners are
I was walking Murray one time and before I had a chance to react , I spotted a loose dog who ran over and viciously attacked Murray. This dog didnt even hesitate. I even had DD in the stroller. The owner came running out and apologized. She said her dog was having agression issues and they were working with a trainer. Ummmm, so why is your dog out unsupervised. They dont have a fence and I have returned their other dog to them at least 5 times. I flipped out on her that day. And the last time I returned their other dog , I nastiliy told her that that poor dog is going to get hit by a car one day. I cant believe how iresponsible some owners can be. I had to share my story.
As for what you should do - try to talk to the owners. If you left an anon letter in their mailbox will they know its from you? Are you the only one who walks your dogs in the area?

I would NOT suggest trying to hit an aggressive dog with any object it is a VERY good way to get attacked. You do not know this dog's history and could provoke it to be more aggressive.
Additionally I find it VERY disturbing to hear that any one would strike any animal with an object. There is no reason to hit an animal aggressive or not. I do not think you can say you are an animal lover then talk about hitting an animal. Take your aggression out where it belongs on the owner that is failing to keep their pet and the public safe.
Im just curious - what would you do if an animal was attacking you, your child or your pet?

you're absolutely correct. i would never hit an aggressive animal if it were attacking my dog, wife or kids.
that's what guns are for. one shot. dead animal. safe family.
and no i'm not joking.
so, you carry a gun with you when you walk your dog??
