how to reply
last year, i was invited to a milestone birthday travel event.
today, i was uninvited.
i'm very sad. the birthday person knows i had started a travel savings account and all that goes with it... but i don't want to be an a$$ when i reply.
how do reply and sound upbeat or neutral about being kicked to the curb?

Oh wow. How do you know you were taken off the invite list? Was it something online?

I think we need more information. Were you formally asked to go or was it in passing? What was the reason you are now not invited?
Regardless, that sucks...sorry.

Original convo: talking about milestone birthday and travel. Was told it was to ba a family event. I said I would love to join. I was given basic itinerary and we made unofficial plans. I shared screenshots of savings as excitement
Today I was sent a text that they want it to be only mom, dad, and adult kids. Sorry. "I know you'll be spending a lot on your new house."

Were you the only one uninvited or were there others in the group that are no longer going?

Re: how to reply
Maybe the honestly downsized. Do you think you were the only one cut from the list? If you have no reason to believe they aren’t telling the truth I would be grateful to have some extra money for the house purchase. It may be a blessing in disguise since purchasing a home almost always comes with hidden expenses. As far as a response I would keep it really simple. Something like “well that’s disappointing. Enjoy the celebration.”

Agreed-- I assume this is non-immediate family, like a cousin, and they meant immediate family when they said "family trip." They should have said so at the time though.
I'd just save the $ for future travel. You might not be able to add to that account since any extra $ will probably go to house things, so it is good that you have a head start there.
ETA-It is annoying that they worded it in a way that makes it seem like they are doing you a favor. If I was feeling a little petty, I might through in something a little passive-aggressive about how money wouldn't have been an issue since you have been saving for a trip.

that's what i ended up going with, but did my best to keep it very very upbeat.
and i agree about the passive-aggressive comment... that's where my mind went first.
but i will count it as a blessing in disguise and move on.
