How to talk w/ someone I tutor about their expectations...
So, the girl I tutor is in 5th grade. Her writing and reading are phenomenal. She does fine in science and SS. Her math is on grade level.
Now, many schools in our district offer a program where kids take accelerated math and start 9th grade algebra in 7th grade. Her school does not.
Her mother wants me to teacher her the rest of 5th, and then 6th grade math in 1 hour, bi weekly tutoring sessions. However, she often struggles in current, grade level math topics. Do I just keep my moth shut since she's paying me and try my best? Or should I tell her mom that I think, while she excels in many areas, pushing her to learn so much more math, in such a short amount of time, just isn't going to be beneficial to her.

Hmmm I think you should give her your honest professional opinion.
After all, you want the kid to do well so and I am sure YOU also want to look like you are doing a good job! I would say what you think in order for the girl to be most successful.
Is she in the city? Does she have a standardized math test to take at the end of the year? 7th grade is a tough year... I know, because I teach it! I would be honest with the parent...

You need to be honest with the mother because what good is it going to do for the girl? If she's not ready, she's not ready. Be prepared, however, for her to tell you she'll find a tutor to do what she asks. Ultimately, it's about being professional and true to what you know. Good luck!
