How would you feel about this?

You informed the people you work with that you would be leaving 1/2 hour early (4:30pm) because you have an appointment @ 5:30pm that you cannot miss. They say "no problem". The day comes and at 4:30pm they call you and tell you they need something done URGENTLY in the next 20 minutes and then take 20 minutes to send it to you? You remind them, and they say they need it done.

Would you be upset?

Re: How would you feel about this?

Um, yeah. I would be highly annoyed. I would tell them it would have to wait until tomorrow, since you already informed them about when you're leaving for the day.

I would be totally PO'd.......BUT if it was a last minute emergency that couldn't be helped, I'd have to swallow it and curse them silently in my mind!

Re: How would you feel about this?

I would be livid - if you want it done NOW, and you need it NOW - give it to me NOW - not 20 minutes from now - ESPECIALLY when I had an agreement to leave the office by a certain time

Re: How would you feel about this?

yes, i would be annoyed. did you remind them that you needed to leave early and ask them to get you what you need to complete the task ASAP? if you did and they took 20 min to get it to you, i would be really pi$$ed. there wasn't anyone else that it could have been delegated to?

Re: How would you feel about this?

I would have politely reminded them I was leaving early for a very important appointment that I could not miss and would do it first thing in the morning.

Side note - if they needed it done ASAP they shouldn't have taken 20 minutes to send it anyway.

agreed.

and not to take their side b/c what they did was wrong - but sometimes it's difficult to remember my own schedule let alone someone elses...it might have just slipped their mind that you were leaving early.

It depends on what kind of job you have. When I was working my job was very deadline driven - a delay of a day on my part could have led to other deliverables being missed and then the whole campaign would have been ruined. If I needed to leave early I had to make sure that I was up people's a$$ that things were passed onto me in time to get my part done.

Re: How would you feel about this?

I would be really annoyed. I have worked at a job that did this to me all the time. I worked for an insurance co. in the claims dept and they would give me a claim to handle literally right as I was getting my coat. It's easy for anyone to say that you should just leave anyway, but even though I had appts that I HAD to get to, I still had to do the work. I needed my job and couldn't risk it.

Re: How would you feel about this?

I would be seriously annoyed.

I would find out if someone else in the office could take care of it. If not, I would deal with it but not be thrilled about it.

I wouldn't have answered the phone at 4:30 if I were on my way out in the first place. If I did, I would just say, "sorry I am leaving now, it will have to wait until tomorrow."

You're leaving at 4:30, so whatever doesn't get done by then will be waiting for you tomorrow....

Re: How would you feel about this?

The reason I got so upset is because it was not something that needed to be done ASAP. It could have waited until the morning. However, this particular recruiter is NOTORIOUS for giving things late in the day and then expecting everyone to either stay late to get it done or drop whatever else they are doing to do it. I'm here at 7:30am EVERY day...and to me that's just ridiculous. He sometimes calls at 4:59pm!!

This has been an issue that was brought to his attention several times, not only by his superiors but by others as well and nothing gets done.

I've begun looking for another job, not based on this incident alone, but it defenitely did add to my frustrations and make it that much easier for me to make the decision to move on.

I realize they have busy schedules and may have "forgotten" but I did remind him, and unfortunately they just don't care. They want and expect for me to make this place my life and I will not do that. I have a family that I have to tend do as well.

Thanks so much girls!!

I would have told them to give it to someone else, or have it wait until tomorrow. What would they have done if you had already left?

Ditto or if it was something I could do on the train I would have worked on it then.
