How would you grade this student?
Ok so my ADHD student, who half the time completes their classwork. He has missed a total of about 3 weeks of school due to suspensions and "vacation". I've been giving tests that they've missed material on and couldn't sit down to take them.
I'm kinda stuck on what to do. Before I present this to my admin, I wanna know what would you do, or what have you done in a similar situation.
I plan on giving those make-up tests, maybe in a single setting away from the rest of the class so they can focus.
I feel that maybe they should be graded differently, but at the same time it wouldnt be fair to the other students who earn the grades they get.
Thoughts?
ETA: by grading I mean in the Report Card for this Term.

we score on a rubric, so probably 1's (far below grade level standards) or incomplete.
it seems harsh, but it is what it is, you know?

I feel if the student has not made up their work then they deserve the grade which reflects this. I have many nice students who missed a week or more of school and failed to make up their work for this quarter and therefore will unfortunately fail. I feel it is not fair to inflate the grade for this child because other students worked hard to earn their passing grade. If anything maybe you coudl give the student an incomplete. Then he will have two weeks to makeup the missing work. If he fails to do so, then his grade will reflect this. If he puts forth effort, his grade will reflect it.

Does he have an IEP? IEP students may be required to only pass a percentage of the material, i.e. 50%. So he could be passing for him.
If he doesn't have an IEP, and the parent has refused to get him, well then I say he should be held up to the standards of the GE population.

I agree. It is what it is. You don't teach him anything by coddling him. You should offer him make-up work - you have to - but you know he's not going to do it. So don't kill yourself trying to find stuff for him to do. Offer him whatever worksheets you have on hand, wait for him to do or not do them, and give the kid what he deserves.
If you give him an artificially high grade on his FIRST report card, he will learn that he can do nothing and be rewarded for it - and the rest of your school year will be helll. Give him a low grade, and see if that scares him into doing the work.
If this sounds harsh - I teach high school. We expect kids to take more responsibility for themselves. I suspect elementary might be different.

I totally agree with the above poster. There seems to be a pattern of a lack of responsibility and accountabilty with this student and the parents. I tell my students all the time - tough love.

Thanks for the opinions. I was thinking the tough love approach, but I didnt want to feel so harsh being he has a medical issue. This is Private school so theres no IEP.
I guess what he gets is what he gets, then maybe itll open the parents eyes to the bigger picture of what he needs academically. (which is what I think a different setting)
