Re: How would you word this?

you were excessed?

I would try not to go into to much detail as to why you were let go, focus on the positives of what you brought to the job and just say the company downsized.

See if someone you worked with would give you a letter of reccomendation.

Re: How would you word this?

Were you laid off or fired? If you were laid off i would say that they were downsizing. If you were fired I would say that the company was going in a different direction and it wasnt the right fit anymore. You can say that you were looking to move on for quite some time. Your company cant say anything bad about you. They can just confirm how you were let go. If you have management willing to give you recommendations i wouldnt worry at all. Good luck!

Agree with the pp, I would say that the company was going in a different direction and you weren't the right fit. If they press, then I would say they decided they wanted someone with more marketing experience or what not.

I agree.

Also keep in mind that when references get checked, it may come out that you were terminated. Most companies are hesitant (slander) to give a bad reference so they opt to confirm dates of employment only.

Have references lined up from your old job & confirm beforehand that they're comfortable being a reference. This gives them the opportunity to opt out if they're uncomfortable or may give a bad reference.

I had two interviews so far and went in this direction which I thought was good but I guess not because both ended quickly after that. I have three more interviews coming up. I'm thinking of saying that my department has been downsized - that we went from a team of 8 to a team of 3 before I left. This is the truth, it just didn't happen all at once. How does that sound?

I thought it was illegal for a company to disclose why an employee left?

No it's not illegal. The only reason they have to tread lightly is slander lawsuits.

Given what you said about how the downsizing is going, I think it's fine what you said.
