how would you write this on an address label
DH and I are having a debate about the use of an apostrophe....would we write:
#1 The Xs 123 main street anytown, ny
or
#2 The X's 123 main street anytown, ny
Thanks for settling this!

I think that in case #2 the apostrophe notes possession, like the Smith's house.
I usually just write The Smith Family to avoid any mistakes.

Re: how would you write this on an address label
It would be the Xs (as in the plural form) the X's is possesive. So the X's return label would read the Xs
PS -- who was right you or DH?

Definitely #1. Say your name was Smith. There would only be an apostophe for multiple people if it referred to you all owning something and even then, the apostrophe would be after the "s". "The Smiths' cat was white." There would only an apostophe before the "s" if it was one person and possesive: " Mr. Smith's cat was white." I hope I made a little bit of sense.
This is the proper way: "Our neighbors were the Smiths."
