Well MIL bought DD a bitty baby when she turned 1; we put it away until Jack was born (22 months) & then took it out at her request DD literally took it and threw it (DH & I were laughing).
Yet she has cousins who are 3 that have American Girl dolls & it seems perfect

Re: How young is to young for an American girl doll
My parents might get DD the bitty twins for christmas this year (she will be 2.5 in December). She LOVES dolls, dress up and imaginary play. My mom has given DD#1 all my old dolls (yes she kept them all) so she is used to playing with those type of dolls. I definitely wouldn't give her a regular american girl doll but the bitty twins are for 3 and up. DD also loves baby dolls though. So not sure but she dresses them, feeds them, diapers them and takes them all over in their strollers...LOL. So I guess I think it largely depends on the child and their interests.
