HR Professionals?

Hi, I know this is career related but I really need the traffic of this board.

I have been working in Community Relations positions for about 5 years and I'm interested in moving more to a HR Generalist or Recruiter role. My roles have always had kind of a dotted line to HR, but I feel because I have no formal training or "experience" in HR, it's holding me back from getting a position that is much more HR focused.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of program I may apply to get more experience? Is it worth it to pursue a HR Management degree or an MS in Labor Relations? Should I do a full degree program or Certificate program? Something else all together?

If you have any other thoughts/ideas, etc. I would love to hear them.

Have you tried applying for HR jobs? Maybe focusing your resume on skills and the dotted line relationship may help. You shouldn't need much HR experience for an entry-level or anaylst/coordinator-level HR position.

I don't know anyone with a certificate. I'd strongly recommend any type of program that can offer you an internship component. That way, you'll gain valuable on the job experience while you're learning.

I work in Compensation. I have a business degree and am currently working on my certification.

A business degree is fine, but you would probably need experience or cerification to get into a specific field.

If you are truly interested, look into joining The Society for Human Resource Management. Most of the site is members only but you should be able to get information on certificate programs.

ETS: If you can put you are currently working on a certification on your resume, then it can go a lot farther than saying that you had dotted line experience to HR.

I think getting a PHR certification would definitely help. There are courses to help you pass the test. I think you can find out more on the HRCI website.

I am starting a HR management masters. At st. joe's the masters is a few additional credits then the certificate
