Humidifier Cleaning Question

Hi, Ladies! Quick question for those that use a humidifier in DCs room...

How often do you clean it and what do you use to clean it well? Any advice? I think I may need to start cleaning my DCs better b/c he has woken up congested the past three mornings....

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Re: Humidifier Cleaning Question

I clean mine about once a week. I go by the instruction which says to let vinegar and water solution sit in it for 5 minutes then rinse. Then leave a bleach and water solution in for 20 min and then rinse well.

I think my DH threw my instruction booklet away which is why I ask... How much vinegar to water and bleach to water?

I'm taking a guess, but I believe it was something like 1oz vinegar to 2 cups water (it was just enough to coat the crevices at the bottom). And then 1 gallon water to something of bleach...but I know I usually put a capful in. But that may not be enough bleach. When I had a dehumidifier in the basement, we used to have to clean the reservior with a 50/50 bleach and water.

Re: Humidifier Cleaning Question

It's so funny that you asked that Q ,b/c I was just reading up on that, this is what I found:
All humidifiers in regular use should be cleaned daily by wiping the inside with a lint-free cloth, and should be sanitized about every seven days by filling it with a solution of 1 teaspoon bleach to a gallon of water. Let soak 15-20 minutes, occasionally swishing the water around, then empty the unit and scrub any mineral deposits you see. Rinse with water until you no longer smell the bleach. The humidifier should also be sanitized in this way before storing it.

Thank you so much! I was just wondering this morning if my DS's stuffy nose is my fault for not cleaning the humidifier properly or often enough... If so, mark one for me in the bad mommy column........
