Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
I have heard some fairly horrendous things....all except for the maternity ward....I was wondering if I was the only one that had heard negatives about it....someone in my office was saying that it's such a great hospital...and I can't really remember specifics, just that a lot of the firemen that used to know didn't like it....

I've heard ok things. I think the problem is there isn't much of a choice - it's the best in the area, even though it's not super.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
I had my appendix removed theer about 4.5 years ago - and I was terrified going there for the emergency procedure. Contrary to my fears - they were awesome. I got the best nursing care - they were wonderful. I actually stayed in the pediatric wing because they had no kids there at the time - so I got a private room where FH was able to stay overnight with me all 3 nights.
Recently, I broke my finger about 3 weeks ago and I went there on a Wednesday night for x-rays - and it was much quicker than expected.
Thus far, I'm pleasantly surprised (and comforted since I live about 2 miles away!). I think the NS-LIJ affiliation is paying off.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
a melville fireman told me "I wouldnt bring my dog there"
but when my dad had his heart attack we went there and I was very impressed! The lobby was brand new and redone, he had a private room, it was really quite nice. Maybe its just the ER thats got a bad rep? I dont know.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
I've never heard anything bad about it and all my experiences there have been OK. The ER was a little slow but they were busy.
My Aunt is an OR nurse there, my friend is a maternity nurse and other friend is a nurse there too. Never heard any horror stories from them either.
My friends all have their babies there and never heard anything bad about that either.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
DH's grandfather was in Huntington Hospital last year when he broke his hip. While at the hospital, he also developed a heart problem and the cardiologists and staff there were AMAZING with him, extremely involved in his case, and extremely helpful in figuring out the best way to treat him for both medical issues (and on how to rehabilitate him after he went through with the hip surgery.. since he was 95 yrs old, the aftercare was crucial..)
We went to visit him there many times over the month or so he was there, and I have to say that the nursing staff and doctors were simply WONDERFUL to him and DH's grandmother, and the extended family. I am not a Long Islander so I don't know the 'history' behind the hospital. But I will say that the care & compassion DH's grandfather received (as well as the family) was invaluable to everyone..

It's been affiliated for a few years now. In my opinion, the affiliation has helped them to invest more money in the infrastructure and facilities - thus improving their care. Always better to be part of a system....otherwise you can't survive in this healthcare environment!

that's true, I remember when they were going to have to close the cardiac and lung rehabs because of the insurance companies lowered the reimbursement rates....

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
St Catherine's is closer to me, but I wouldn't go anywhere EXCEPT Huntington.
I've had excellent experiences there, and whenever myself or a family member chooses a surgeon, we make sure he/she has privelages at HH.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
Its a good hospital. As an EMT who's company frequently goes to Huntington, I can tell you why the firefighters don't have good things to say. Its all about the ER. You go in there with a patient, and the staff there looks right through you. I am not kidding, its like they are looking right at you but don't see you and the strecher. You can stand there for 10 minutes before they even acknowledge your presence.
But the level of care there is very good.

Re: Huntington Hospital--any experiences?
I've been there a few times - L&D, foot surgeries, Maddie's spinal tap, croup, chest pain..sigh.
ER - I wasn't thrilled with. When I had to go there for the chest pain/numb arm, they brought me right in. When we had to bring Maddie in for a spinal tap, I was told to hold her down. I thought it was completely inappropriate. DH was outside crying & pacing bc he couldn't handle her cries. They tried numerous times to get a spinal sample, contaminating the samples bc they didn't have the smaller needles. Finally I told them not to touch my daughter anymore. We were admitted & had to wait out the fever to make sure it wasn't meningitis.
OB/GYN - great place to deliver. First time shared room (disgusting bc of gross roommate); second time my own room (kissed up to nurses )
Overall I rate them a B

My sister had her baby here and had nothing but great things to say.
As a regular hostipal, i couldn't comment but as for as NS-LIJ affaliates, i would go to them however our Hemotoglist is at NS LIJ directly in Manhasset which has been great
