Not a frequent poster, but I live in Houston. Thankfully our neighborhood did not flood, but so many others have. It's is devastating.
Stay safe! The forecast is calling for more rain, so I'm hoping you avoid the worst of it.

Here's some pages with links to various organizations.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/houston-flooding-hurricane-harvey-recovery-how-to-help-donate/ http://ghcf.org/ http://abcnews.go.com/US/hurricane-harvey-victims/story?id=49451305
Here's some local charities that are solely dealing with the Houston flooding. There are charities that are dealing with specifics, so if you want to focus on food supplies, or animals, or housing, etc, this list is really helpful.

Isn't there a poster here who lives in that area? Has she checked in?
Xelindrya lives in San Antonio, so hopefully she's far enough west to have avoided the storm...
Thanks for checking in.
I'm perfectly dry. We got rain but nothing we aren't very much used to here in SA. They made it sound much worse that it was. First day of school started with no trouble. No major flooding in our city.
Houston has some dry areas and some major floodings. It is over capacity and has other major issues that even without a hurricane make it very easy to flood. It something people just don't 'get'.
Rockport was actually the first "Hit"
today however is EXTREMELY busy for me as I am insurance and our normal claims person is out so guess who's back in the claims saddle? Getting my clients handled all up and down the coast.
I have family all up and down that area as well. Most have checked in, just missing one. He last checked in a day ago but with a broken heart he said he was going offline due to his relationship woes. His sister is blowing up his fb trying to get him to check in.
Family so far has the trifecta. Flood, tornado and wind.
Found plenty of shingles in my yard but none are mine. Our stop signs are blown down and there's some wind damage around town but overall no one in town is whining a single bit.
AJ and I spent the weekend making dog and cat toys to donate to the animal shelter for displaced animals.

Re: Hurricane Harvey
Many areas are poverty-stricken. These people just don't have the means to load up the car and family and move inland, and drop $ on a hotel, the way most of us can. They are paycheck to paycheck. Not that any home is hurricane or flood proof, but some of these homes wouldn't survive a Cat 1.

Has olsteen opened his church yet? Holds 16000 people and he won't open it for shelter. Someone on fb posted his home address so people could go there

Yes he finally did today. My question is, how are the people going to get there now?! Roads are still flooded. People are camping out on their roofs, how are they going to get to his church?

I've seen posts about this over and over on FB. They say the church was flooded, then some people posting videos of it not flooded. Then I've seen some videos of the basement in the church is what is flooded. I don't think they can house people if their basement is flooded. Who will take care of 16K people in the church if they DO open it up? Do they have enough volunteers and staff for that, staff that can actually make it TO the church (thinking no since most areas ARE in fact flooded).

They are reporting a Houston officer has died due to flooding while trying to get to work. It's all so heartbreaking.

One of the pics I saw trying to prove they were flooded looked very suspicious. It was a basement with a pump set up and the bottom of the drywall already cut out. Looked like an old pic bc there's no way they'd already be in the middle of fixing it when the flooding isn't even over. Snopes have it a mixed review saying the pics were taken near and not in the church and pics showed the streets outside were not flooded.
Eta- they seem to be accepting evacuees now

Re: Hurricane Harvey
I have cousins that live in Houston in a suburb north of the city. My cousin just posted a few videos on FB of his development and all of the flooding. His house is elevated so his house was spared but the rest of the development looks pretty bad...

yes they did
I read that they didn't. Not in Houston at least, as the hurricane wasn't even supposed to hit them bad.

They absolutely didn't. There would be too many people on the roads, and people were safer in their homes vs. in their cars.

Exactly. It is impossible to evacuate a city of that size .

My cousin just posted on fb the area they just moved from a year ago. Entire town is only accessible if you have a boat. Neighbors are helping neighbors thank god but it's truly horrific. To think that could easily happen on Long Island is terrifying.
