Hybrid SUV's?
My car is almost paid off, and when DH's payments are finished, I want to get another SUV, but I would like to get a Hybrid one.
Does anyone know which car manufacturers have hybrid SUV's? Anyone have any experience with one or own / test drive one?
Thanks in advance!!

Toyota Hylander. We haven't test driven it yet, but are considering it when we get a new car later this year.

This is good to know. I don't know why more American car manufacturers don't jump on the bandwagon with this. It would be a way to differentiate themselves and carve out a specialty niche from the foreign car manufacturers.

Dodge I believe is working on a hybrid too, but they were just bough by Germans. I am not sure if they still count as an American manufacturer.

I think part of the problem is that hybrids aren't selling that well. I think Honda has stopped manufacturing them completely.

Really? I wonder why they aren't selling as well?
Is performance or the life expectancy of the engine affected or something?

Maybe the additional cost is detering people??

Is this true? I would think with gas prices as high as they are and the fact that they will just keep rising, the car manufactureres would be producing MORE not less. Also people are becoming more aware of global warming and are more willing to do things to help the environment.
ETA: Honda still makes hybrids - the Civic comes in hybrid. And Saturn is also now manufacturing the VUE in hybrid.

Here's what I was remembering, just didn't recall that they were keeping the Civic.
Honda to stop production of Insight, still has Civic

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
Edmund's list of hybrid SUVs
It's mostly US companies with hybrid SUVs. (Although Ford and Mercury are technically the same company, as is Toyota and Lexus).
Chrysler/Dodge has been owned by Mercedes for almost 10 years. They were just sold to Cerberus Capital Mgmt, which is an American investment company, so they actually just went from a "Foreign" company back to an "American" company.
The big issue I have with hybrids, is what do you do with those extremely environmentally dangerous batteries after they are at the end of their life? They usually last about 10 years or less, and even though some companies are looking into how to deal with them, there is no good nation-wide solution to deal with these highly toxic problems. You're just exchanging one type of pollution for an even worse type.

For most hybrids, yes. The battery mode is for slow, city driving, or starting. Once you're at a certain speed, the gas engine usually takes over all of the power needs.

Interesting. I didn't know this... I would say 85% of my driving is highway (I live upstate) so I wonder how much more fuel efficient a hybrid would be for me anyway.
I also didn't think about the battery disposal / life. I wonder how much it would be to replace the battery?

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
i Have the lexus hybrid
the other manufactures that i know of for suvs are toyota highlander ford escape mercury mariner saturn vue
as for the lexus hybrid - we get about 25 miles per gallon on regular gas - it stated around 29 or 31 expected when we bought it from the dealer - but dealer numbers were not accurate - it is acutally more eficent on the highway and in rush hour traffic - but it is better gas mlage then the other suvs in its class and the rest need premium gas including the non-hyrid version of the lexus
just so you know you can get just as good or better gas milage with the deisal models that diamler chysler has(dodge/jeep/mercedes)

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
I didn't buy a hybrid SUV, but I did look into regular hybrids recently and ultimately decided not to get one from a cost perspective. (Let me preface what I'm about to say by saying that my husband has a Prius and LOVES it (so do I) so I'm pro-hybrid).
I was debating between the Camry and the Camry hybrid. The cars looked exactly the same, but the hybrid was about $4000 more. I then calculated based on how many miles that I typically drive a year and the average cost of gas, how much I would save per year driving the hybrid. However, when I compared that to the fact that the hybrid was more expensive to purchase in the first place, I calculated that it would take me 7 years just to break even on the "cost savings."
Now, other things to consider definitely are that you'd be helping the environment and some states let you drive in the HOV lane with just one person for CERTAIN hybrids. But the cost comparison is something really interesting to look at...

This is an intersting analysis. But I thought I heard there was also some sort of tax credit involved if you purchase a hybrid?

Thinking about it, I know that when we bought the Prius a few years ago we got a nice tax credit, but we didn't ask when we were looking at the Camry. That is certainly something to think about as well. The dealership would be able to tell you what, if anything, it is.

I read that Honda is coming out with a clean diesel form instead of Hybrids. have no idea what that means.

Isn't this true for a regular car battery as well? Disposal of all kinds of batteries is an environmental issue.

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
here is the tax credit you can get for each car - you must buy it to qualify - can't lease hybrid credit
