The big issue I have with hybrids, is what do you do with those extremely environmentally dangerous batteries after they are at the end of their life? They usually last about 10 years or less, and even though some companies are looking into how to deal with them, there is no good nation-wide solution to deal with these highly toxic problems. You're just exchanging one type of pollution for an even worse type.
Isn't this true for a regular car battery as well? Disposal of all kinds of batteries is an environmental issue.
But there is an existing infrastructure set up to deal with traditional lead-acid batteries. Any store that sells batteries must take old batteries, and there are places that recycle them. Currently, there is no way that I know of to dispose of the hybrid batteries that is friendly toward the environment.
Basically all cars are really bad for the environment. Fuel burning, exhaust, harsh chemicals used to make the cars, shipping them all over the world, off-gassing from the plastics and paint, mining to get the raw materials, disposal of old cars, etc, etc.... Fuel economy is only one factor in how cars are ruining the environment.

They are taking out a lot of the sulfur and pollutants from diesel so they burn cleaner. They are also finding ways of containing or further reducing the pollutants in the exhaust.

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
Toyota has the hybrid Highlander Lexus has a hybrid SUV also.
Chevy has the HHR, which is very low to the ground but has room inside like an SUV. Ford has the Hybrid escape, which is taller like an SUV but on the smallish side.
Toyota & Lexus use the kinetic energy technology in their hybrids, so they have higher performance at lower MPG. Both these SUVs are great in the hybrid class.

I thought I read somewhere- that as soon as you go on the highway- you are using gas anyway??? I think I read it on here????? True. I think we actually went back & forth in a post a few months ago. The current Hybrids are best used in local or high-traffic driving. The engines are renewed in idle, or when the brakes are applied. So far there is no car that is as efficient in all types of driving. Supposedly Chevy's new Tahoe addresses that, but I have not seen any reports in the trade pubs to qualify their claims. If you do a lot of long-distance or highway driving (not rush hour) then the current hybrids are not going to help your gas usage.

Re: Hybrid SUV's?
have you read anything about the new clean deisel? I would love the inside scoop on that- it is less then $2K more to get my SUV with it in the future- and it's reasonable enough - that I would consider it

I asked DH about it. He said that traditional diesel engines tend to be less fuel efficient, and that they do not have to report their MPG like traditional or hybrid engines do. In addition, they need extra attention, such as to be kept warm or it will not start well from a cold start, etc..
He said he will talk to the master at his shop & see if he has any solid information about the new clean diesel. It might burn cleaner, but it might be more expensive for the owner in the long run....
