Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

Have any of you been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism during your pregnancy.

I've had issues with my heart for probably about 10yrs, meaning palpitations and shortness of breathe and have had tons of tests all of which came back normal, however, last time at the OBGYN I told them about it so they ran a thyroid test and it came back slightly low. I have a full thyroid panel tomorrow.

I was just wondering how they can treat this during pregnancy and will it affect the baby?? Chat Icon

Thanks Chat Icon

Re: Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

i'm kinda of going through something like this. i've been having heart palps and fluttering for the past few months. i just did an EKG and an Echo last week for it. he said if the Echo comes back fine that it may very well be my thyroid. he does not want to do the panel until after the baby is born b/c he said he would not put me on the medication while i am pregnant and that i will be fine so he rather wait to do the blood work. he said that being pregnant can cause so many crazy things to happen and to not stress it if the main heart tests come back perfect Chat Icon

Re: Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

A friend of mine was on synthroid while pregnant. Since, synthroid is just perfectly safe to take while preggo.

I have a congenital heart defect and I got the full thyroid bloodwoork done this morning. Like you, I had heart palputations, shortness of breath, pins and needles in my chest (like when your hand is asleep), my hair has not stopped falling out (at 5 months PP) and I am exhausted even though DD is sleeping through the night. I go for a cardiac MRI and stress test n a few weeks.

I write all this to say...
1- you are not alone
2- if it is your thyroid, it is easily fixed and sythroid is NOT harmful to your little one.
3- I know what it like to have heart issues while preggo and it is scary. You are in my Chat Icon

thank you so much, this makes me feel better. I was just getting nervous bc I'm only 20 weeks and didn't know if there was medication to be taken or if this would harm my munchkin... Chat Icon

Re: Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

They will indeed treat it while pregnant. I have an unstable Thyroid, and my Gyn already discussed the options available with meds.

Re: Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

I have hyerthyroidism (Graves Disease), but I'm not preggos. They can treat it through pregnancy with two solutions:
1. low doses of UPT
2. surgery to remove the thyroid and you will be on sythroid which is easier to monitor.

Re: Hyperthyroidism and Pregnancy

I am currently pregnant and on synthroid (100mg) right now and have been since june. Never had a thyroid issue until after my last pregnancy...apparently so many things can go crazy in your body with all the hormones and its not uncommon..

I will be checked and monitored monthly since they may have to increase or lower the dosage throughout my pregnancy..

don't worry, everything will be fine..

they should send you to an endocronologist since they specialize in that..Chat Icon
