I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
And, don't know what the heck to do with this kid.
Yesterday we had my nephews party so he didn't nap.
The last two nights he has been waking at 4:30 in the morning. He yells until 5:30 when I basically give in and give him a bottle. He then proceeded to sleep till 9am yesterday - and 8am today.
He is refusing to nap today. He normally goes down at 12. The cleaning people are here and making all sorts of noise so I guess it's distracting him. I took him out of the crib. Put him back. He is standing up and won't even lay down.
I am at my wits end. I NEED him to nap. I have a million things I need to do today and feel like I'm just waiting around praying for him to fall asleep.
Last week - his naps were getting soooo ridiculously good. Over two hours which is unheard of in this house. I can't have that trend end.
What do I do? Give in - take him out - and KNOW that he will wake up at 4:30am again. I have my nephew here tomorrow so sleeping in is not an option being that he gets dropped off here at 7am.
Do I keep him in there longer? He's been in for about 20 mins - and still refuses to lay his little tush on the mattress even for a second.
Oh - and he is in teething HELL right now BTW. I did give him some motrin for his pain before I put him down!!!! UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH I hate hate hate this!

Your Ds is a older than mine...so im not sure how much experience I have, but sometimes it take Luke 30+ minutes to settle into a nap for sleep. If he is not screaming I would let him be.

Re: I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
I had a similar nap experience last week. I KNEW that Lily would never go to sleep if I left her in there, so I got her out. I gave up on the nap that day, but if I were you, I would try to take him out, do something mellow & quiet with him for 20 minutes or so and try again. good luck!!! I know how hard it is when something like this happens.
ETA: maybe I would try giving him something to eat or drink too during that mellow time. You know him best though. Do you think he might give in and lay down if you leave him there longer? I know for me, Lily would just get angry.

Update - he is sleeping!!!
I swear - I hit Post - and within two minutes he laid down - and I believe he is OUT now.
THANK YOU GIRLS
Now, if only I can get him to NOT wake up at 4:30 in the morning tonight - I will be golden!

is he crying? if not, I would leave him in the crib...even if he does not sleep, he will get SOME rest from just being in there

My DD has had napless days too but she wouldn't cry. She would play in her crib so I would leave her in there until I thought her nap should be over (1.5-2hours). Sometimes after 45-60 minutes she would fall asleep.

Re: I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
I put DS in his crib at "regular" times when his nap is due. Sometimes he sleeps right away sometimes he does not. He take 1 nap per day. Anytime between 11:30am and 1:30pm. Sometimes it takes him up 1 hour to fall asleep. He just chills in his crib. I consider it "rest" time. If I feel by 3pm that he is OUT OF CONTROL and whiny, I put him down in his crib with his blanket and pacifier for him to chill. Sometimes he stays in there just playing with his blankets for 1.5 hours.
IF I have to do something and he already 1+ hour behind his nap and it does not look like he going to sleep I just pick him up and go to my errands. He usually crashes in the car and I have been lucky (like this morning!) that he stays asleep when I tranfer him to his stroller.

Re: I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
WOW, yours is the millionth post this week about kids in our DC's age group with sleeping issues.
Honetsly? I think we have to just deal with it. Because they are NOT going to sleep great every night, or every week or month. Its never gonna happen and we get more stressed waiting for them to go back to "normla" vs. just trying to figure out if there's an issue and trying to keep them pain free KWIM?
It really seems like tetehing and the age...since its ALL of us seeming to have some issue.
I feel your pain

Trying to break the curse She was up the other night at 4:30am though, I had to sleep with her on the couch for 2 more hours b/c she had skipped her nap and was overtired.
Does that count??

This is us exactly..
I still will give DS a "nap" even if he doesn't fall asleep - as long as he isn't agitated or screaming of course. We then call it "quiet time" Luckily though he rarely gets fussy in the crib anymore - he loves it in there!(hence why at 2 yrs old I am in NO rush to put him in a bed )
But at Jack's age, it was definitely more unpredictable and trying. He would scream if he didn't want to nap and if CIO didn't work I would just take him out and deal with it, unfortunately
Luckily the older Nikolas got, the better his napping got. He can and will play nicely in his crib up to 2 hrs even if he won't nap.. But more often than not, he eventually falls asleep (sometimes it can take him an hour to finally fall asleep.. )
But he still goes through phases now; some weeks its constant 'quiet time' (no napping) other weeks he's out cold the minute I put him in the crib.
The sleeping stuff is ever-changing and always frustrating
I'm glad he eventually slept for you Diana!

Re: I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
My DD has always been a good sleeper so when her naps or night time sleep is off i know that something isnt right.. i think since hes waking now later around 9am then those days u may want to nap him later. he may not of been tired just yet. wasnt he just throwing up this week? maybe shes still not feeling well?

Re: I am about to lose my mind - sleep related
Thanks everyone.
The thing that scares me the most - and why I freak out - is because this kid is like clockwork every single day.
I worry that if he wakes at 4:30 two mornings in a row - he will do this for the rest of his life
