I am an idiot when it comes to applying eye makeup
From shadow to eyeliner, I just have NO clue

I've found for me only certain colors look good and that blending a lot helps.

I never use those little brushes that come with some of them. I either use my fingertip or an eye shadow brush. Easiest thing to do to start out with is try neutral colors until you get the hang of it. I am a fan of Stila's kitten and starlight - very neutral. Then add some eyeliner or even just mascara.

I am no makeup artist thats for sure but through years of trial and error heres what I do..for eyeshadow I used to study pictures of makeup jobs on people with similar eye and skin color and then try to emulate the application...for eyeliner I use either the liquid one thats like a pen because I feel there is more control of it and I feel it drys quicker, or I will use a crayon one and blend it softly with a q-tip...

When I was in junior high I'd rip out pictures of Cindy Crawford and copy her makeup 
She's got brown hair and brown eyes like me! That's how I learned though, and read LOTS of fashion magazines.
I mostly use grey or brown liner on the outer half of my upper and lower lid, blend it with a sponge, and then put a like color shadow over the liner to set it.
For my lids I use a light color all over the lid, then a darker color along the outer half of the crease, then a highlight (a little shimmery shadow) on the outer part of my brow bone and a tiny bit towards the inner corner of my eye.
I LOVE eye makeup!!!!!

go to the mac counter with a picture..
show them.. they will show you how to apply it..
I like the sexy smokey porno look and they showed me how to do it and I can duplicate it perfect..
its time and practice and GOOD brushes
