I am miffed and I need a restaurant!
Saturday is my birthday... I don't know where I want to go. DH is no help: I asked him to make reservations at Po and by the time he decided to do that the only reservations left were 5:30 (who eats dinner at 5:30??) and 9:30 (too late)
Would anyone care to share a place in NYC they have enjoyed or heard great things about? Shouldn't be anything overly fancy, just a place with good food, French, New American, Italian...

We just ate at a restaurant called La Vela on the upper west side on Amsterdam. Its Italian and I thought it was good and definitely not too fancy.
I love Del Frisco's --its a steak house and on the fancier more expensive side

For our Anniversary this past year we went to Victor's Cafe (236 W 52nd St). Cuban Food. Very good.

We go to the four seasons for our anniversary
They are so nice there and give us champagne to toast, and then a huge pink ball of cotton candy with a candle
If you dont want to order off their a la carte menu, you can tell them your going to the theater and and its a prix fix
also ask for a table next to the pool

We go to Petrossian for our anniversary every year. It's French, on the pricer side, but they do have a reasonably priced prix fix menu.
Also, each year for my birthday, I like to try someplace new that we've never been to and last year (maybe the year before), we went to Balthazar in SoHo. Very good food!

Balthazar is one of my favourites, but you would probably need to have reservations for it on a Saturday. You can always try, though. I think it is priced reasonably.
Another place I love is Blue Ribbon.

It is more of a late night place, so you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a table, I think. They don't take reservations for under 4 people, but try calling and see if it will be difficult to get a table.

LOVE Victor's - but you have to like Cuban.
Becco is good for Italian - not very 'fancy' or pricey........
