I am miserable
I have a terrible cold, this is my second day home from work. I am convinced I got it from a co-worker who sits next to me, she was sick at the end of last week. Why do people come to work sick and make the people around them sick. Thats part of the reason I stayed home - so I don't get people on the train and at the office sick too. What do you do if you are sick? DO you stay home or go to work and possibly spread your germs to everyone you come in contact with?

Re: I am miserable
It depends on the severity of it. If I have a cold, I will go to work bc I can't justify being out of work bc of a cough or stiffling nose. If I am running a temperature or vomitting, I without a doubt stay home. I do make it a point to disinfect the office & all my surroundings on a daily basis, sick or not.
Feel better Lauren

I normally go to work when I have a cold unless I am sneezing and coughing a lot. Feel better!

Re: I am miserable
Our company prefers if you don't call in sick.... however, that just means that you aren't working at 100%, and you are going to get the rest of the company sick, and not all of them will come in. So, instead of letting one person stay home to recover, 10 people are out.... Makes sense to me.
I usually come in, because if I'm sick, I don't want to get my family sick, and I don't want to waste a personal day staying in bed all day....
j/k If I don't feel well, I stay home. If I'm relatively OK, I come in.

Re: I am miserable
It would depend. If it was just the sniffles, I'd go in. But when I'm coughing up a lung, I stay home. My boss would just tell me to go home anyway, no pint in infecting the whole office.

Re: I am miserable
sometimes you can't help it. I was out majority of last week because I was sick, but went back to wor Friday even though my boss told me to stay home and rest. We were closed Monday though so I didn't want to get even more backed up than I already was. I made sure not to go near any of my coworkers and I opened doors using paper towel so I wouldn't get anyone sick.

Re: I am miserable
I would have to go to work. I only get 3 sick days but 5 weeks of vacation time! They hate when you call in sick. if you go over the 3 days you get a nasty letter telling you that you have been reached your limit and can be let go. Even if you have vacation time left.
Sorry your sick. I hope you feel better soon!

Re: I am miserable
I've had a horrible cold all week. I went in so far this week but took off today. I felt awful all week, so what was I supposed to do, stay home all 5 days? I have too much to do at work to take off that long...Colds linger for a week or more, so I knew I couldn't stay home for the duration.
The way I figure it is that we are surrounded by sick people everywhere. If it's not co-workers, it's people next to you at Target or Stop and Shop...can't live in a bubble.
But I work at a computer and don't have to do much physical labor...If I had to do anything physical, or even be standing most of the day, I think I couldn't have gone in this week when I went in. I asked myself what I would be doing at home, and I'm so sick I can't sleep, so I'd be here on the computer, so I might as well be at work on the computer.

I have a lot of freedom since I'm in science. What I do is I go in and run whatever experiments I have to do, and then leave by 12 or 1. Basically half days. I don't know if your job allows you to do that. Feel better!

Re: I am miserable
I stay home when I am the Queen of Mucus. Nobody wants to be around me.
I can work from home easily, so that's how I compensate.
I was sick with a sinus infection and bronchitis two weeks ago. I took off 4+days. The boss told me to stay home.

Re: I am miserable
It all depends on how I feel. If I have a sinus infection and my head feels like it is about to explode, I stay home. If I have a fever, my rule of thumb is home until 24 hours w/o fever. If I just have a cold and feel icky I typically suck it up but I make sure I touch every surface I can on the subway (to give back to those who infected me)

I just don't get companies with policies like this. What do people do who have children and have to stay home with them? (and who, then get sick from their children and have to stay home themselves) I know they're concerned about abuse, but three days is ridiculous, IMO
