I am officially starting to panic!

I am having surgery on Friday! Chat Icon

I will be sedated for up to 5 hours...and I have NEVER been "put out" in my life nor have I ever had surgery... ever.

If you have been sedated for surgery, please tell me your experience...and tell me all will be fine! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am officially starting to panic!

All will be fine. I was sedated a few years ago and I will admit I was so nervous. they game me something to calm down, but I don't think it took. I counted down from 100, the last number in my mind was 96 and then I woke up. You won't know you were out for five hours. You go to sleep and then you are up. You will probably be cold, just tell the nurses and they will bring you an extra blanket and/or heat lamps. You will do fine. See if your doctor can give you an Zanex or something like that two hours before surgery. You will be able to relax.

Re: I am officially starting to panic!

Chat Icon Chat Icon You'll be fine! I have been under 3 times. I woke up crying hysterically the first two times. The second one was for my c-section and I think I was in a lot of pain and sad because I had not expected to have to be knocked out for it. I was a little nauseous after that too - but it didn't last that long.

The last time was a much longer surgery - maybe 3 1/2 hours. I woke up ok - but I was very nauseous for a long time afterwards and did throw up a good amount. That sucked b/c it was near my throat so throwing up was painful. But all in all, not that bad. It's weird though b/c one moment they are telling you to count backwards or something and the next you are waking up like a little blip of time.

Good luck!!!! It'll be ok - and it'll feel like it's over before you've even started! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I am officially starting to panic!

I've been under for 4 different surgeries, and I even went "under" when I had laughing gas for some teeth extractions.

I counted backwards about 3 or 4 numbers, then I woke up in the recovery room. I was groggy coming out of it, but it wasn't bad at all.

Re: I am officially starting to panic!

I had surgery about 2 years ago to remove a cyst. I'm not sure exactly how long I was out, but it was a while.
You're going to be just fine!!!
