I am on not on here a lot, but I have behavioral questions--9 mos old

Let me start by saying I have been totally blessed. Ethan never cried as a little tyke, slept through the night at 2.5 mos old and for the most part even today is a SUPER happy baby.

Now at 9 mos, things are changing, and I am trying to figure out if they are changing for change sake, or if I am not doing enough.

Ethan HATES the car, after about an hour, goes into actual tandrum mode, if that's possible.

He also isn't really great at independant play. Now granted I work 40+ hours a week, so I am assuming on the weekends, he is crying to be held bc he misses me. Or am I creating a monster by holding him?

I sometimes feel "I" am not doing enough as a mom. His Nanny is AMAZING, he goes to music school, has play dates. We read to him for about 15 min a day, we have sing and dance time, etc. But I always feel like I could do more.

This weekend, we were at my in laws (they live 4 hours away and see Ethan about every 2 months). He was, a nightmare. Wouldn't nap, cried a lot, fussed, wouldn't eat. My MIL finally said to me "is he ALWAYS like this?"

He isn't, but now I feel like Sh%t. What if he is becoming the miserable kid?

Nancy, does he have any teeth? So many times, otherwise sweet, pleasant babies turn into holy terrors when they start teething. It's normal!

First, I doubt he is becoming the miserable kid because of one weekend being miserable Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And its annoying when someone asks, is he always like this....he could have been out of sorts because he was in a different place...also, from what you described, is it possible he has an ear infection? Sometimes there are NO real signs, but just being miserable and crying

Last week my DD was like that and yep, she had an ear infection...my mom is a PED and said she sees lots of them this time of year, couldn't hurt to check

and lastly, you are not alone....my DD is getting over her ear infection and kind of being bratty and when I see other happy kids I'm like, why meeeee...but she's not always like this! They are little people with their own little personalities! Chat Icon

No ear infection.
He has had 2 teeth since 4 mos, though maybe his top ones are coming in.

Beyond this weekend being bad, I find that EVERY weekend he is a little cranky.

Do you think he misses the nannyChat Icon

I don't think he misses the nanny but, is his routine substantially different on the weekends than the weekdays? Maybe that's it?

Definitely could be the top teeth, he's the right age for it.

NO WAY, that is not it. I can tell you from experience, no one can ever, ever replace mommy - my kids are with the nanny more than with me and DS still loves me to pieces when I am home.

I agree with the PPs - he may do better if he has the same exact schedule on the weekends as he does with the nanny. How much do you do on the weekends, do you think he is overwhelmed?

Oh and keep in mind, he might be acting fussy for the nanny too, have you asked? Chat Icon

don't listen to your MIL!!

My mom and mil both do that, if DD is a little off and it makes me so so angry. IDK why they think that every baby should be perfect every second of every day.

I'm sure he is just going through a phase. I hope it gets better soon.

We live in NYC
EVERY weekend is hectic. Travel to LI to see family and Friends. He sleeps in LI a lot. I try to keep his schedule into place, but it's difficult.

Even this morning he was fussy, but as soon as she walked through the door--SMILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She tells me when he is fussy, but it is few and far between. He is happy with her.

DS seemed to "change" around 8 months. He used to be very happy and not as loud and as opinionated. We now have to be careful where we take him and he DOES get cranky. He was so easy before then.. not that he's difficult now be he seems to want more and gets frustrated that he can't have/say what he wants. It's pretty normal IMO.

ETA: DS does not like his schedule being disrupted at all otherwise he lets us know.Chat Icon

It just sounds to me that he was tired and probably needed a nap.

He def. does not miss the nanny on the weekends, so please don't even think that. Chat Icon

I hear ya! DS has completely changed when he turned 8 months. I feel like I have a newborn again only hes not 8lbs anymore! He wants to be held all the time always climbing on us. Naptime and bedtime is just an absolute nightmare. He only wants to sleep in the bed with us. Idk how he discovered it was even an option, he was STTN in his crib from 7 weeks old. He has to be rocked or in the carriage to fall asleep. He freaks out when I leave the room.

Although when hes awake and not supposed to be sleeping he's as happy as anything. He laughs and talks and smiles all day. Hes a lot of fun when its playtime and thank god he eats, but I swear a switch goes off when he knows its time to sleep.

The arrangement we are putting up with now is his naps are in the PNP in the living room and he sleeps in bed with us until 4am when DH leaves for work. Transferring him is a nightmare, he screams and stands in his sleep until he wakes himself up. So at 4am I set up a whole "bed" for us in the living room until 7am Chat Icon
