I am so miserable

I think I'm going to lose it any minute now... Alex hasn't slept for over 2 hours since Saturday. All she does when she's awake is cry and cry... her little voice is hoarse from all her crying. SHe won't calm down unless I'm walking and holding her and she won't let anyone else hold or feed her so I've been up every hour during the night for the last five nights. And to make matters worse, they're killing me at work. I've been working from 7am to 6pm straight through the day with no breaks... even working through my pumping, and I still can barely keep up. Yesterday an attorney asked me to write a motion that was due the next day and I told him I just couldn't. He told me "tough". I almost lost it in his office. And then I get home and all I hear is wailing all night long... I don't know how much more I can take Chat Icon I think it's teething because she's drooling a lot and chomping on anything she can get in her mouth. We tried giving her tylenol but it does'nt work... what else can I do for her?

At this point, I second the vote on calling the doctor. There is no sense being at your wit's end at work & at home. It's very hard taking care of newborns, but it isn't normal to be up every hour in the middle of the night.

Is there a possibility that she has cox sackie? Does she have a fever? You'll see tiny, tiny bumps on her fingers & in her mouth.

If this makes you feel any better, it won't always be like this...

Re: I am so miserable

I just called the Dr... he's going to call me back. Hopefully he'll have some advice. No bumps in her mouth or her hands. Can teething really make a baby this miserable?

The baby orajel says not to use it for a baby under 4 months without a Dr. We tried freezing a teething ring but she won't clamp down on it. We even tried a frozen banana, recommended by some of the books, but she just started to nibble on it. Even through her misery, she's still a little porker Chat Icon

Have you tried giving her some tylenol for the pain?? If you have and that doesn't work I would definitely recommend taking her into the doctor to make sure it's not something else like an ear infection.

I'd be surprised if she was teething this early although it's not completely unheard of...it shouldn't be enough that she gets up every hour though.

Re: I am so miserable

Doc said it sounds like she's teething... he told me the baby orajel is useless. Recommended that we try the tylenol again tonight and if that doesn't work to bring her in tomorrow for a check up to make sure it's nothing else... she has been sleeping since 8am, which is her longest stretch of sleep since Saturday, so hopefully this is a sign that she's getting better

I feel for you... I really do!!! Chat Icon

Caiden didn't sleep more than 2 hours until he was 8-9 months old and I also worked FT and was pumping and nursing. Fortunately you do get used to it if it keeps up, but unfortunately you don't want it to be that way. My son just didn't want to sleep. He always wanted to nurse! I still can't believe I nursed him for a year.

It doesn't sound like it'll be an ongoing thing. It's probably just a temporary thing.

It could be gas? Have you tried Mylicon drops? My son had bad gas problems when he was that young. Does her belly feel tight? You can also try the pushing the knees up to her chest thing? I believe some other mommies might have some ideas.

Chat Icon to you and hope you get some sleep soon!

Re: I am so miserable

I haven't seen her on lately, but you should FM MrsR - see what's working - if anything - for her. I don't know what advice to offer...I know how overwhelming it can be to hear them cry and cry and not have any sleep yourself. Even though you are the only one she wants...still take some time aside for yourself...even just a few minutes. The demands of work and motherhood can be alot to handle. Have you had her to the doctor or taken her temp? It's probably just teething, but maybe an ear infection or something???

Re: I am so miserable

We went through this also, but I wasnt working, so I can only imagine how hard it is for you. A couple of thoughts:
-- I wouldnt write off oragel as "useless" until you've tried it a few times. (and my doc OKed it at 12 weeks)
--I agree with trying Mylicon also. Again, give it a couple of tries.
-- Is there anything that calms her? The stroller? A car ride? For us it was the baby Bjorn. I walked miles and miles with that thing. If any of the above DO calm her, have DH or friends/family take her to the mall and walk and walk and walk while you rest.
I know its hard to believe, but "this too shall pass".
Good Luck! Hang in there!
