I am so nervous today (re:shots). Please help! - UPDATED
Zach is finally going to start his shots today. I am only going to be giving him the Dtap one. I am so nervous about it. I am glad he is finally well enough to get it but nervous of how it will go.
Any advice on how to get us both through it? Should I bring the tylenol with me? I think I heard once that someone fed the baby a bottle right after in the doctors office.
TIA.
UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the advice. The doctor did not give him a shot. He said he still wants to work on the reflux issue and making him all better. He did not want to add a shot to the mix. We are going to start them at his 6 month well visit next month. He was not concerned at all that he has no shots yet. Good news is we can start more foods and try to slowly get him off the Axid by his next visit.

Re: I am so nervous today (re:shots). Please help!
I always had a bottle ready when DS had to get a shot.
I also was the mom that would leave her son on the table with the doctor, hide while he got the shot, and then run back over to rescue him All like "OMG what happened? Come to Mommy"
They calm down quickly. Just hold and feed afterwards.
Make sure to ask the doctor about possible side effects, what to be on the look out for in the area where the shot was administed, and what to do in those cases.
I didn't give tylenol unless he was really cranky afterwards, had a huge lump or slight fever.
They are pretty tough so it should be okay quickly

My ped gave DS the Tylenol right before the shot. Just keep an eye out for high temp...but tylenol should keep it down. He may be mushy for a couple of days

I didn't give Rylan anything before his shots. He screamed bloody murder until we got back in the waiting room and gave him his bottle. He was fine after that.

Thanks everyone
I will have a bottle ready to go. Did you feed DC in the waiting room afterwards so as not to take up an exam room too long?
DH has decided to come along with me I will make him be the bad guy and hold him down for the doctor. I just can't do it

I always hold her during her shots. She cries, but it only lasts a second and then she's fine. If you keep your cool, he'll read your signs and feel better quickly.

This is why DH is going to hold him. He is calm and collected about this. He can read his signs. I will hide in the corner

Re: I am so nervous today (re:shots). Please help!
MY recommendation is to close your eyes right before they give him the shot. I swear, the look of sheer surprise followed by, "Mommy- what's happening?" on my 2 month old's face is PERMANENTLY burned into my brain.
Give the Tylenol about 15 minutes before the shots. I give it as soon as we get into the room. Have the bottle ready to give him right after the shots. You'd be amazed how quickly the sucking soothes them. I was BFing and you wouldn't believe how fast I'd "whip em out" (you'd think it was Wednesday!) just to soothe her. I didn't give a crap if the nurse, the doctor, or even the Pope was in the room- nothing was going to stop me from soothing my little one.
Try to stay calm. It will be just FINE- I promise it's way worse for us than it is for them!

I do the same. DS is usually done crying before they put the bandaid on. I have never fed him after or given him tylenol.
